Graphic Card not detected after format; drivers can't be installed

Hello, I hope you can help me, because this issue is bothering me. I have a Sony Vaio Laptop VGN FZ38M, Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit. I had Windows Vista Home Premium and I decided to format my laptop and use W7 instead. My graphic card is nVidia GeForce 8400M GT GPU. I visited the official NVIDIA site and downloaded the drivers, but they can't be installed; hardware (aka card) not detected. What can I do? I can't even use screensavers and play video games without my graphic card -_- The laptop recognizes a Generic Adapter. If you need more information let me know.
    Thanks!

Try this one Sony : VGN-FZ38M updates | Download updates for VGN-FZ38M
Save it to your desktop, and run it in compatibility mode for Windows Vista.
    Right Click>Click on compatibility tab>Check the Run in compatibility mode for: box>select Windows Vista>Click Apply>Click Ok>Run installer>Reboot
