Did you install the motherboard chipset drivers? If not, that could be the reason. As Dell supports Vista (32/64 bit) it should work OK on Win 7 as the same drivers can be used.

Generally, on an install the correct install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Desktop or Laptop System Software (3) Install motherboard chipset drivers (4) Install Device Drivers including Video, Dell Sound, NIC drivers, etc.

Do not allow Windows to install the NVIDIA update. Only install the Dell driver and see how that works.

I linked you to the Dell drivers in my original response. Try that one. Its for Vista but will also work for Win 7.

If both the Dell and the Windows installed driver cause a problem, that sounds like the video card may have developed a problem? (I assume its a separate card in the laptop?)

Hi benjiboy69, Has the graphic card had the "oven Trick" performed on it ? Normally the gfx card in the m1710 is the geforce 7*** series , when the card as been overheated using the "oven trick" (too high a temp) the firmware on the bios reverts to the quadro ( the original card specs, before Dell tweek it ) the pc bios will still see it as the original firmware but windows will not and report it as the quadro , Download the geforce 7 series driver from Dells' website then you should be ok
