Solved Help me set primary adapter on AMD Catalyst 6520G+7670M

If 6520G is on the same chip as CPU and we say that CPU=6520g, then it reaches ~75 degrees at peak with an average of 67 and 55 when idle (did some tests with AMD System Monitor - it's a nice thing actually, helped me figuring out how does this machine work :D ), and 7670M peaked at 66 degrees I think with an average of 62. So it's not that much, though I'm not sure how does it work for laptops, but I remember my old 8800GTS reaching 92 and similar degrees and it used to be normal :D So compared with that 75/66 aint that bad. Or am I wrong?

And about those "proper" drivers - how will we know when AMD will have finally released them? Should we check their driver section every once in a while or what? I don't suppose they are going to send us an email about that (would be nice though :D )

Well I don't think they will, it's part of the first generation of dual cards in AMD, I think. So it's still experimental. I think we'll see the changes in future CCC updates, but for now - we got what we go.
I don't wanna speak too soon but mine has been working nicely for a week now (tfu tfu tfu).
:D

It's good temperatures for a dual card system and one that is as powerful (I think) as it is. 60-70 is fine and I'll invest in a cooling pad under the laptop for heavier gaming.
The laptop is really cheap by any standard - look at it this way:
-new
-pioneering hardware: quadcore and dual-gpus

usually it would be 2000lt for anything like this, but now - laptops are getting more efficient and cheap. it's good news to me.

Yeah, it is a good price.

I did some research though and found out that in 12.6 beta AMD released drivers for:
Code:
Notebooks with AMD Accelerated Processors
[LIST]
[*]AMD Radeon HD 7660D (A10-4600)
[*]AMD Radeon HD 7640G (A8-4500M)
[*]AMD Radeon HD 7520G (A6-4400M)
[/LIST]
but not for ours.. and left "Future Catalyst releases will continue to add Dual Graphics support for additional titles".. So they are doing something, but soo slowly :( And I've checked 12.9 beta - still nothing for us.

Right now I'm using 12.8, and pretty soon I might install this. DL'ing right now.
This has 6520g specifically and 7000M series (what we also got).

:) things are looking up, eh?

So it seems. :)

How are 12,9? Have you tried them yet? It's good though that they are finally working with the 7000 Series, but there hasn't been anything mentioned about our Dual Graphics processing, like in 12,6.. :( Well, maybe in 12,10 (13,0? :D ) we'll finally get them! :D

12.9 beta is alright - no crashes or anything.
When the dual graphics is available, CCC gives a little icon in the top right saying so - F1 2012 for example does this. So I guess all has been working fine.
Other games have not given me dual graphics experiences - they leave it to 7670m :), which is ok too. 6520g would only slow me down and it's really just for lower power consumption and browsing/movies/simple stuff.

I'm eager for new drivers, since I want to do more with my cards. :)
Try 12.9 - it's good.

12.10 whql and 12.11 beta have been released! And in 12.11 beta they say that they've improved a lot with 7xxx cards, though as I understand it's only with 28nm architecture gpu's, and our 7670 is 40nm, right? Sadly, there's nothing official about our particular dual gpu type and after installing 12.11 device manager still says that 7670m is 6700/6600 series card.. Also I'm not sure yet whether these drivers are better than the older ones, but i did get a nice fps raise in Skyrim, though it wasn't a driver related thing - apparently by default most of the programs use only one cpu core out of four, and most of the time it's not a big problem. There's a good tool to check how many cores are used by which running programs - CPU Control - and I've noticed that when I set Skyrim to use 4/4 cores it runs much much better. It can even handle Ultra settings nicely (though not perfectly) and High settings without any problems. Before that I had huge lags with High settings in more crowded ares, like cities.. :)

Anyhow, my point was, that you might find this useful :D

help please

Hi Kaneda,

I've got the same issue with the same laptop. Problem is I still can't figure out how the fix the damn problem. Since you already did it, could you give me a hand and give me some detail?

Many thanks

Hi Eddy,

This problem surfaces at random, really. It's all about driver stability, so just check for new drivers at AMD and take a stable release. Updating my drivers used to fix the problem for some period of time before the problem pops up again. I can check and reply to you which release I have (the longest running one without problems), but I know it's not the newest one, I haven't had the problem in quite some time.
There's no need to panic though - I thought my PC would die from these BSODs but it is still with me. :)

Also, the graphics card works as intended - it only applies the 7670 when it is actually needed. On some old games in the period 2000-2006 it IS a bad thing, because the old games might benefit from the high-end card but whatever :), the 6520g works pretty good as well as saves energy during the process. :)

Hope this obvious advice helps! ;)

Hi,
thanks for your reply. It did help. I installed the 14.4 ATI CCC and it does recognize a 6000-7000 model. But again, not specific 7670M.
It's kind of frustrating though, the whole driver searching situation. Makes me really doubt of purchasing a PC with this card-combo ever again. I don't know who to blame, AMD or ATI or maybe even ASUS for building a PC with this many problems and not doing a damn thing about it.

Anyway, I'll keep searching for other drivers, just in case. If you have any other advice, please let me know.
Thanks! ;)

There's a 14.4? Cool, how times have changed. Yeah, the 6000-7000 is a series actually - so most problems with the drivers are that they are not specific, but just go for a broad range of cards to fix possible issues.
A few of the older drivers recognized both cards, but it's not really needed - they still work regardless.
The driver download and search procedure is a pain, but you only need to do it maybe once or twice for a PC.

Now here's where I do not agree with you - apart from the BSoDs I've had and the pain/suffering that they cause, the combo-card is absolutely amazing for energy consumption and for the 7670m life expectancy too. There's plenty of benefits to be had. The only problem being that certain games cannot recognize a sleeping card and therefore revert to the 6520G, without ever addressing the 7670m. But it is only a handful at best.
The cards are quite experimental, so... you can't blame innovation :).

It seems you've solved the problem, which was the intention - I'm glad something I wrote some time ago helped. :)
