    AMD - Display driver stopped responding ...


    I have a fairly fresh install of Windows 7 (< 1 month), because I found a good deal on a SSD I couldn’t pass up, and it has been running nice.
    I mostly use this machine for working and as such used the on-board graphics card of the motherboard (GA-880GM-UD2H), however with the great reviews on Guild Wars 2 I figured I would get back into gaming and bought a XFX Radeon HD 6870 for the occasion. As my Thermaltake TR2-450 would not be sufficient for this FX card I swapped it with a TR2-500 I had on another machine.
    I can play GW2 for hours at best quality and it works great – no slugginess or stuttering at all.
    However if I start the machine and open up a browser I can within 5 min get 2-3 errors (“Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered.”), and eventually the system will reboot. It is not limited to one browser and has also happened with Windows Live Mail.

    I have looked around and not found any solution yet so I am hoping someone in here might have the magic potion needed.

    DO you do overclocking or not ??
    IF you do better change thee overclocking tool. . .
    IF not then you might be using latest drivers for your card and sometimes latest drivers have issues like that ........
    SO i will suggest better un-install it and install a previous version driver .......

    No I don't overclock - never got into that heh
    Though your suggestion regarding the drivers from ATI is something I never thought of so I will try that and get back with the result after a little testing

    Removed the drivers and reinstalled, this time without updating to 12.8 of Catalyst (CD got 12.4), but sadly the problem still exists

    Best way for me to get it to happen is opening a browser and scrolling the page, but even opening the event viewer can cause it to happen.

    I would be interested in any other suggestions the forum might have.

    I am sorry not to mention it earlier that simple un-install leaves some files/setting . . . . . There is a software that cleans driver " driver sweeper " use that . . . . BUT again i m not that sure it will work !

    Driver sweeper doesn’t exist anymore, but there is another “Driver Fusion” with similar features, which I tried. Not sure I will recommend it as it took me a couple of tries to get CCC reinstalled but none the less it did remove the files.

    Unfortunately doing a clean install didn’t fix the problem.

    I have done a lot of research (part of the reason I was a little slow at responding) and it seems the problem falls into 3 categories:

    1) PSU – It goes without saying that you have to have enough power to support your FX card but is looks like most of the comments about PSU were "You-are-not-using-my-brand-so-you-suck-and-that’s-why-it’s-not-working”. I don’t like fan boys (one of many reasons I don’t buy Apple products) so I can’t take guys like that serious. The symptoms I have are NOT on high load but on low to average loads.

    2) Bad FX card – Like with any other hardware there can be an actual problem with the card. Bad memory, a GPU overheating because it isn’t seated properly or a fan misfiring. Again I have no problems on loads so it’s unlikely it’s a card issue.

    3) Software – I know lots of people that would argue against software problems but I did find a couple of compelling reasons:
    a. The problem is not isolated to one model or even one brand. This happens on several models on both NVidia cards and ATI cards.

    b. A couple of posts from IT techs that meticulously went through every single piece of hardware in a troubled machine and still couldn’t get rid of it suggest that it might be related to the software.

    c. Some people have “solved” their issues by reinstalling Windows 7/Vista and not experiencing the problem after.

    d. Finally Microsoft themselves has this KB article about the problem http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/wind...dware/gg487368, indicating a potential timing issue on Vista/Windows 7
    I have made the change to the registry as listed in 3d above and hopefully this will solve the issue. I will update this thread once I have some more info.

    The registry change didn't work either, nor did a clean install of 12.8 (not an update).
    I have opened a ticket with XFX on the card but so far no helpful suggestion there.

    The most likely outcome will be that I return the card and get something else although from the looks of it (and as mentioned above) the problem can happen on any model of either NVidia or ATI so i might continue to see it.

    i suggest you reinstall win7, do not connect to internet, run installation disc for graphic card then reboot. before installing updates for windows, look to see if theres a update for your graphic card. if there is dont install it.

    I have thought of reinstalling Windows 7, but since I just went through the task it was not really something I was looking forward to.
    Instead I opted to get the card exchanged for an NVidia instead. So far it has been a good change as it is working and it is also much quieter.

Sometimes, after having been on for a long time, my screen will go black for a few seconds. It comes back a bit awkwardly, with different parts of the screen appearing separately. Once everything is back, I get a little popup saying that the display driver stopped responding, and has recovered....
