Can't install Nvidia Drivers GeForce 310M - get rid of Standard VGA ad

I've been trying for a few days to update the video drivers on my new Sony Vaio to the Nvidia Drivers but I can't get it to work.

I have a Sony all in one, VPCJ118FX/W computer but in order to get rid of all the preloaded Sony software that the computer came with, I installed a Clean Version of Windows 7 Professional 64bits. Since then Windows installed a Standard VGA Graphic Adapter and a Generic non-PnP Monitor.

I know that this computer comes with an NVIDIA GeForce 310M Video Card

I tried several times to install the latest driver from Nvidia site, but as soon as it starts it says that it couldn't find any compatible hardware. They told me that this is because I should not be downloading it from Nvidia site, but that I should download from the Sony site, the drivers that they have put together for this computer and the Nvidia Card.

I also tried doing that, downloading the drivers from the sony support site, but it doesn't install either it just get frozen (non-responding). Talked to sony and they mentioned that it might be because the files that they have were put together for Windows 7 Home Premium, and I installed Windows 7 Professional and that might be the reason why they do not install.

Talked to Microsoft technical support for hours but they were not able to figure out a way to get this resolved. The problem is that the Standard VGA Graphic adapter is very limited in its functionality. Lots of video applications don't run (Movie Maker) or run limitted (Premier). I can not even run Windows Aero on the computer!!!

Any help on how I can install the Nvidia driver for the GeForce 310M and get rid of the Standard VGA driver would be MUCH appreciated!!!!

Here's more information regarding my computer:

    Sony Vaio VPCJ118FX/W

Installed Windows 7 Professional 64 bits
    Intel Core i7 @2.67GHz
    Memory 6GB RAM
    Video Card NVidia GeForce 310M

    Thanks in advance!

Some times this works and some times it don't. It says it is a auto check for Nvidia drivers.

As far as I know, there are no differences between driver installers for Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional. At a guess, the Sony support people are making stuff up to get rid of you.

Manufacturers have an annoying habit of modifying moblie graphics adapter's device IDs. That prevents them from being recognized by the installer from nVidia. The simplest solution is to use the customized installer from Sony, but if it won't run, I don't know what to tell you. Have you tried running it with administrator privileges?

It may be possible to modify the nVidia installer with the device ID for the Sony version of the 310M, but it's not something I've done personally.

I tried it. It shows that my current adapter is a Standard VGA Graphic Adapter. Current Installed Driver 16.38.
Available Update: Verde 280.26 Driver, Version 280.26 WHQL, Release August 8 2011

But when I download the update, it says it didn't fine compatible hardware ((

    A little something to read.

Lots of people are having the same problem. I know you have a 64 bit but it gives a idea the hell many are going through with Sony. It seems that Sony is the playing hard ball for what ever reason. You got rid of their bloat ware they don't like you any more. Yesterday I got that driver from Nvidia and it installed perfect on my GT220. Why it won't install on a clean install is beyond me but I do have one more idea. Run Windows update and see if it picks up any updates for your card.

The reason is there in NVIDIA driver release notes under supported product.

    Here is the line again.

The following Sony VAIO notebooks are supported: Sony VAIO F Series with NVIDIA GeForce 310M, GeForce GT 335M, GeForce GT 425M, GeForce GT 520M or GeForce GT 540M. Other Sony VAIO notebooks are not supported at this time (please contact Sony for driver support).

Your Computer/all-in-one is of J series.

According to this you will not be able to install any driver for the graphics card.

You can try the driver from NVIDIA & Laptop News | Latest NVIDIA drivers and related news | laptopvideo2go.com if you want.

    For Win 7 64bit: Drivers | laptopvideo2go.com

You can check the link for installation.

champ2010 pretty much summed it up. Reference Nvidia drivers (or AMD for that matter) will never install on a Sony laptop, which despite being an all-in-one desktop is nothing more than a laptop built into a monitor. The only way to get them to install is to modify the INF by adding the DevID for the video card in it, or to use one of the pre-modded ones champ2010 linked to at champ2010.

More than likely. Surprised Sony didn't blow him off completely when he told them he installed his own copy of Windows and not Sony's bloated version.

Federicogros, was the original official Nvidia driver you tried to install the "M" mobile version, and not the regular driver? If it wasn't, and you haven't tried it yet, give the mobile version a try. You might get lucky.

hi, im having the same problem he is. I tried also to install latest nvidia driver, yet i would not able to install because it says that the driver cannot detect the graphic component.

My laptop is Dell 3500, using Hybrid Technology with Intel and Nvidia. Currently the older driver working, but when to install latest driver, it cant.
