Can't Install ATI Drivers Once I Uninstall Previous Driver

So basically when I try to install the newest driver. If I choose custom install with the old driver installed it detects my video card and lets me install the driver (I haven't done this yet, since ATI suggests all previous drivers should be uninstalled). If I follow standard procedure and express uninstall the previous catalyst suite it no longer detects my video card and I can't install the new display driver. I took a look in device manager and everything looks fine with the current driver installed (12.6) - here is a shot http://i.imgur.com/DFMvl.jpg. But I noticed that when I do uninstall the drivers it says "standard VGA adapter" or something similar instead, and I can no longer install any drivers, including 12.6. The only way I can revert to having my driver installed is via restore point in windows. I sent a letter to support about a couple of months ago and they never got back to me. Maybe because I once told them their feedback was always useless, who knows. The thing is, I don't know what to do. My windows is up to date, my registry is clean (I use ccleaner), and I'm no advanced user, even though I follow instructions well enough. Hope someone here can help me out. Thanks !

As you have a notebook, you may need to use drivers from Acer:

Acer Support: Downloads & Support Documents - Notebook / Aspire / Aspire 5740G

That's assuming that Acer uses a custom device ID for the graphics adapter. (That seems to be a common practice in notebooks.)

If you wish to update them from the AMD site, you may have to install the new drivers over the old. That should be safe enough.

Thank you for the reply. Least now I know I can install them over the old ones. The strange part is, I never had to install drivers from the Acer website. Always installed them directly from the AMD/ATI website. And this would be acceptable if I knew it was a thing on their end (meaning the newer drivers would require this). But it's not apparently, because if I uninstall my current drivers, I can't install the exact same version again. I made a backup of the setup files that I originally installed my current driver from. So is there any way to fix this problem ? It would be convenient in case I have to go back to older drivers for some reason.
