    Monitor Resolution problems

    Hi to all!

I really hope that you can help me. I installed Windows 7 RC and after install my monitor resolution is set to 800x600. If I try to raise it, I get just one more option and when selecting it, I get a black vertical bar on the right of the monitor with still very bad resolution.

My Display Adapter is listed as Intel (R) 82865 G Graphics Controller (Microsoft Corporation XDDM)

    and my Monitor is: SyncMaster 943 NW/943 NWX/ NW 1943/NWX 1943.

I hope you can help me find a solution to this problem.

I would recommend looking for updated drivers for the adapter.

The first Intel chipset that is supported by W7 is 945, yours is 865.

If you can live without Aero, you might try these dell drivers.

    Drivers and Downloads

    They are for your graphics.

I have read reports from people that this driver should work.
    Can not guarantee it though.

    good luck

    Update on this issue.

    Hi Squonks!!

I downloaded the drivers that you recommended. First I got a message that the software wasn't for my OS. So I ran it in Xp sp2 Compatibility Mode, it ran but it stopped and told me that my system didn't meet the necessary requirements.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

    Thanks in advance,

    Man I'm sorry,

Intel has abandoned that chipset a few yrs ago, and there are no,
and will be no drivers for it for W7.

Maybe after W7 hits the streets, some nerds may hack a driver and port it to W7,
but I wouldn't count on it.

I never asked, but is your computer a laptop or desktop with integrated graphics?
If the latter, you could buy a new graphics card.

Else you're basically out of luck.

    Greetings.

    Thanks Squonk!

It is a desktop and yes it is an old pc, bought in 2004 but that still works great with Vista, without the fancy Aero, but aside from that it is my workhorse!

The specs say that it has a free AGP Slot, so I will try to find somebody that still sells AGP video cards. Just one question, if I find and install an external AGP video card, will that fix the problem?

    Regards and thanks

Those are quite expensive and I doubt that there will be W7 drivers for it.

Just buy an internal AGP card.

There are quite current models made by ATI for AGP, like the HD4650 and HD4670, HD3650 and HD3850
And they are not more expensive as their PCIE counterparts.

Great cards that will give you full Aero experience.

    Good luck

If you need basic Aero compatibility without any of the power draw issues, just grab a Radeon 9700/9800 or GeForce 6xxx off eBay for about 20-25 bucks.
Buying a Radeon HD 3xxx or 4xxx would be a gratuitous waste of money since you can't play any of the latest games anyway.

    I Agree

Not entirely true. Depends on the CPU and amount of RAM.

On a Dutch hardware site, the ATI Sapphire HD3850 for example gets 5 out of 5 stars.

Several people report is such a great card, that with a 3GHz P4 or AMD 3200 Barton,
and 1,5gb to 2gb of 400Mhz DDR Ram, they can play the newest games like UT3, F.E.A.R. 2,
Call of Juarez, Call of Duty 4 on highest settings,
    and Crysis at medium.

The AGP bus can easily cope. (Changing to PCIE so soon was a marketing trick anyway)

But I agree with you that if the OP only want's to use it for Windows 7,
he doesn't need the latest models.

    Greetings
