Windows 7: Aero glass problem

My desktop doesn't support Aero Glass because my video card is too old, is there anyway to enable the aero glass without my video card spazing out?(or buying a new card...)


EDIT: if you were wondering, i have the onboard video card for a dell 3000.

There are in fact ways to force enable Aero on none supported graphics cards, but I've never had any luck with this working on older graphics cards.
Plus, if done inproperly can cause a lot of strain on your GPU and cause harm.
I wouldn't recommend it, but it is possible.
I'll provide the steps, if you choose you'd like to try it.

But I would highly recommend just purchasing a new graphics card.
You can get one that will support Aero for fairly cheap.

Yeah i'm looking around for one now, i found one that i'll be getting on friday, but just to mess around with my computer, id like to give the force enable a try anyway.

I was just looking at some for your system. I found some nice ones for 50-80 dollars
Just make sure what ever you buy that it is PCI interface, not AGP or PCIe. That's the only thing your system supports.




Alright, to force enable Aero:

1. Click on Start button, then select Run.
2. Type regedit, Right click then select “Run as Administrator” click "allow" when prompted from the Security Dialog (if UAC is on, if not just open normally.)
3. In regedit, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft
4. Create a new registry branch called DWM. (If DWM doesn’t work, try to create and use WDM registry branch instead.)
5. Inside the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DWM\ registry branch, create a new DWORD 32-bit called EnableMachineCheck.
6. Right click on EnableMachineCheck to set the value to 0.
7. Repeat above two steps to create another DWORD called Blur, and set the value to 0.
8. Repeat again the steps to create another DWORD called Animations and set that to 0.
9. Open a command prompt with administrator privileges and type:
   net stop uxsms (then hit enter)
   net start uxsms (then hit enter)
10. Attempt to enable and apply Windows Aero in Windows 7. Restart if required.

This hack is really only meant for graphics cards that do not have the Windows Aero Authentication, so there's no garentee that it will work with older GPU's
