can it just be left in this selective type startup?

what is not running that was running before?
Did you read Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup ??

You disabled all startup items and all non-microsoft services. Simply do what's explained there
does this sort of mean a safemode like normal mode? avast is still running.

am i supposed to uncheck all these in the list?
    All is explained in tutorial

Also of note, that laptop is circa late 2006, you aren't going to get great performance with that and Windows 7, I wonder which flavor it came with of Vista, probably.

I was xp media center edition, vista upgradeable.

I got it from my parents when it broke the hinges which wiped out the video cable inside.
I fixed it and it is usable even though older. Shame they hard solder a video chip into these with no possibility of upgrading.

I am running nvidia driver 186.82 from 2009,
I got the driver from laptopvideo2go.
I can not get any newer driver to work.
    nvidia chip is go 6150
