Thanks for all the replies, you've all given me a good insight to what this actually requires.

I was hoping not to lose the case as I really like it, But if so then I guess I will replace it.

The whole thing sounds like a hassle, trust me to choose the PC that would cause it lol.

As for building from scratch I honestly wouldn't know where to start with it all I was hoping to just add to my current PC what was necessary but I never thought so much would be needed. I'll have a look around the net and see what I can find in terms of hardware

Mike, like I said though, you are buying at a good time, can piece together a sweet gaming rig for under $1000 USD.
I've spent over $2000 on what I have now.
CPU/video card are the 2 most important, next comes Motherboard chipset and RAM quality, backed by a good quality PSU, 700W+ one should cover ya.

For a nice gaming rig at a good price:
At the moment, I would go with a AMD FX8350 CPU, Radeon HD 7850 Video card, 990FX chipset'd motherboard, and 8 gigs of CAS Latency 7 RAM [DDR3-1333 minimum; ultimately whatever motherboard's highest not OC'd speed is listed as, cost difference here is too small] is a good starting point.

The PSU isn't the only issue here. Do you really think you can run heavy-duty games on a dual-core CPU with 3 GB RAM?

For gaming, you'll need a new computer.

Exactly my point. Thank you.

I'm glad I'm not the only one saying it now.

To be honest, I'm not confident enough anymore on selecting parts for an entire build. Over the past year or two, I've kind of been reduced to a PSU guy. :/ Back in the Core2 days, I could recommend an entire build for someone, but not really anymore.

Well sometimes we can make a mistake on recommendations like a athena psu , but we could throw out some options and others could point out other suggestions. I'm not to good on the AMD side so I would recommend an intel build. It really depends on the ops budget. If he posts back with a budget we can go from there since he said he will look into it.

Sorry MichaelMarr that wont rock for gaming

Suggest

CPU - quad core + (i5, i7 - Bulldozer, Pile-driver etc)

Mobo - z77, x79 - AMD 700 - 900

GPU - GTX 650 to 690 Series - AMD HD 6900 to 7970 Series

PSU (Branded) 700w +

Case full gaming (front/back 120mm fans or water cooling) depending on your /$ you want to spend.

Check compatibility (you can build a virtual PC here) > Pick Parts, Build Your PC, Compare and Share - PCPartPicker (note drop down for your Country)

Benchmarks (up dated daily, CPU, GPU etc) > PassMark Software - Video Card Benchmarks - High End Video Cards

Thanks Dude, Stephanie.

My budget doesn't really have a limit but as I mentioned I don't want the top of the top gaming system just something that can do what I asked about easily in my first post.

I understand this isn't going to be cheap I don't expect it to be I'm not going to buy cheap parts and pay the consequences some time down the line. The recommendations for parts here are great, of course I don't just take one persons word for it I do my own research on each part but nevertheless I am grateful for the time taken to help me out.

This pcpartpicker is awesome too I had no idea this existed, I love this forum
