Need help updating drivers for graphics card.

Hello everyone. I am having a lot of trouble trying to update the driver on my graphics card. I currently have an Alienware MX17 R3 with an Radeon HD 6870m.

I try to download the driver directly from the AMD site but I get this message. (Attatched)

I go to the Alienware driver page and unfortunately the driver on their website is the one I currently have which is from 2011. To be sure there is a new driver for this card somewhere and I just can't find a way to get it on my computer.

It's very unfortunate that I can't download the newer driver from the AMD site and have to resort to the Alienware site... who does not have the most updated driver. It's 2013 and I'm forced to use a very outdated driver.

Does anyone have any solution to this.

    Hi there Ryan90!

Seems like it's a common issue where Dell driver won't let you install the regular drivers. Sometime we might need to modify the INI file. Try this one AMD Catalyst if that didn't work I did find an article that might help you with your problem Proper AMD/ATI Driver Install - Alienware User Support it's worth a try.

Thanks for your reply! The first link is the one that I've been trying and been getting that "compatibility" message. I will look at that article and see if there's a solution there. It's just frustrating to not be able to keep my hardware up to date.

This thread seems like it may help. I just need to run through it and hope for the best. Thanks again. I'll post back again if there are any more issues..

Well.. neither of those worked. I really appreciate the help though! Anyone have any insight on how to update my drivers aside from using the manufactures website?

I had this issue with an old Dell I bought last month, only the Dell driver packs will install, not the ones made by chip manufacturers. Intel has a newer video driver than dell, but I can't use it.

    ......standard question:

Why are you looking to update the driver?

[If it aint broke, don't give it more options... muhahaha!]

Years ago I wrecked my OS with a bad chipset driver update.... so my cautious advice is to look over the notes for the driver update for REASONS to update, if none come to mind, skip it.

Plus I'm not a big fan of beta video drivers, let someone else do the testing, bad enough I have had to go back versions when new #.xx series ALL render something I use infrequently (so I didn't notice it right away); non-functional. [Just another reason to avoid driver updates unless something specific comes up.]
