Can't Change Dual Monitor Assignments

I'm running a Sapphire 7770 with Windows 7 Pro 64bit. I wanted to setup my Flat Screen TV as a second monitor using an HDMI cable. It works fine except for one thing, the TV is set as Monitor #1 and my desktop monitor is set as Monitor #2 and I can't figure out out to make my desktop monitor #1.

Working in Control Panel/Displays when I select the TV monitor (#1) and try to change the drop down menu to my Desktop, it doesn't change, it just moves to select to Monitor #2 (Desktop). Trying to change the desktop to TV does the same thing.

If the HDMI cable is disconnected everything is normal with the desktop as Monitor #1 and Monitor #2 is not displayed.

How can I make my Desktop Monitor #1 when working in Dual Monitor mode?

I don't think you can. I get the exact same thing with my 6850 when I connect my TV via HDMI (monitor connected via DVI). I have a feeling that the HDMI port is set as the primary port at the hardware level for whatever reason.

About the best you can do is to make sure that the monitor is set as primary in the Windows display properties. Then it is just a matter of enabling/disabling the TV from the "multiple displays" dropdown to "show only on desktop 2".

Thanks for the reply. That's too bad as I was hoping to use the Windows Key + P to switch between monitor setups. I wonder if that is because of the card's configuration or Window's?

Old thread but first result on Google. A while back I was trying to figure this out and found no answer online. I believe I accidentally figured it out the other day.

It seems to be hardware/BIOS controlled and not software controlled. The entire process of what I did can be found here: HD7950 Dead after forgetting to plug in the PCIe 12v Rail?

Here is a simplified version that I think would work and not require you moving the GPU from one PCIe slot to the other and back.
  1. Shut down computer. Unplug PCIe power to Graphics card and monitor cables.
  2. Turn on computer. Computer should refuse to boot and graphics card fan should be spinning at 100%.
  3. Power it back off and disconnect all power.
  4. Reset the BIOS using the motherboard reset jumper and pull the CMOS battery to completely reset the BIOS
    • If this doesn't work, move your card from one PCIe slot to the other and boot the computer. Then move it back to where you want it.
  5. Reconnect everything except for the monitor that you want to be #1.
  6. Once booted, connect the monitors one by one in the order you wish for them to be assigned.
