Ati driver install can't get to log on without black screen

Hi all,

So I have dealt with this problem several times now...

A few times getting through it fine but always get too excited and don't log how I managed to get through it.

I recently reformatted and can't get my drivers right. I had spent hours looking on forums and have had no successful answer.

I have tried different gfx drivers old and new.

So here's my basic issue: I get my mobo driver installed (and for a 990fx saber tooth with an and fx 4170 chip) then I reboot as it asks for. I go to install my gfx driver next and it loads all well. Then I reboot and hit the brick wall. I can't get past the win logo screen to the log on. I know it is there as the sound plays the log on toon. My monitor basically resets and flashes dvi as a new input and then goes blank as If it is turning off.

My thing is that I know it isn't the driver or the card or monitor.

It has worked before effortlessly. I feel like it is software side that something isn't clicking right.
Or is it power that's not working properly?

Anyways I'm open to hear any suggestions or troubleshooting methods.

I am about to uninstall my gfx driver and try to go back to basics. Turn off the computer, unplug it and remove 2 sticks of ram ( currently running 4 sticks of 4gb each, used to have 3 monitor display running until recently) then I am going to make sure I only have one of my hdd's plugged in and try again.

Thanks in advance.

Ps. I read in a forum to adjust a bios setting on the north bus from peg/pci to pci/peg instead and I have done this to no avail.

Hi Bestdetested, Welcome to SF. Can you get in Safe mode? If yes, uninstall the GPU drivers from their and use Guru3D - Driver Sweeper to remove all the bits of old GPU drivers. Try to reboot in normal mode and see if you can get past the logon screen. If you are, then you can install the new drivers and enjoy your PC.

Archer -

Thanks for the reply. I have done as you recommended to no avail.

This seems to be a sticky situation that seems to catch a lot of users.

I have now reformatted and installed gfx driver first thing on a fresh install to find the same results.

Could this be a psu issue?

I have attempted to try this with minimal set up. Meaning 1 stick of ram, one hdd and no other drivers / hardware present.

What am I missing? I have gone through all my bios settings and even attempted to update my bios to no satisfaction I set it back to the version that was working last. Is this possibly an ati software issue and I need a prior driver from the latest to be functioning?

I feel like I have gone through the appropriate trouble shooting process but still can't determine what the issue is.

Silly enough I am now having issues to get my windows to load in safe mode to undo the last attempt of driver install after the fresh reformat. f8 takes me into boot options (hardware) and not advanced boot.
Delete takes me to bios settings.

Super frustrated and annoyed at how long this is taking.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and hopefully can get others to find the cause of this issue.

Bestdetested-

From your system specs (please fill in your complete specs), I see that you have 6870. I have the same card and I am using 750W Coolermaster PSU.

Please let us know which PSU you are using? As already mentioned that you have tried to start the PC with single RAM stick. One more thing, it might sound stupid. Give it a shot though, Normally if an external GPU is installed then onborad GPU gets disabled automatically. Go to your BIOS setting and disable the onboard GPU and let your PC run on the external GPU.

I have a 700w cooler master as well. As for inboard graphics there is none on my mobo. The ati driver isn't functioning properly, it is conflicting with the standard VGA driver it appears.

Try a different driver.

The one directly available as the latest by the maker of the video card, first.

Not the latest one from AMD.

If you need to jump back to previous versions of drivers to try, guru3d.com is a reliable source for video drivers.

It says "No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning properly. Please install the AMD driver appropriate for your AMD hardware."

This is in safe mode

When I open catalyst in regular windows it loads fine and says that there is no gfx with a ratio of 0x0 @ 0hrz

While I can get to the display by right clicking and selecting display options.

The Xfxforce website says to go to AMD. I've tried the 13.4 and the 13.8 beta. About to attempt 12.8 as I believe this was the last known working driver, if memory serves right.

I also have moved the gfx card down a pcix16 slot and magically windows decided to install pci to pci driver as well as VGA adapter driver.

So it gets better!

I removed 13.4 and cleaned registry.

Installed 12.8 while desktop was at 8x6 or maybe 10x7 res.

Restarted, win load screen comes up, then monitor resets to dvi connection, light stays blue and no windows logon load sound.

Restart to safe mode, screen is in 1280 x 900 res. wtf....

Safe mode uses the built in vga driver that is capable of going to higher resolutions.

I would check your motherboard specs and use the first PCI-Express 16 slot only, other slots especially likely on not high-end motherboards, don't give the full lanes to the extra slots.

As for the weird res in safe mode, I would ignore that glitch.

What actual connector is in use on that 6870 and do you have another cable to try? or another type?

It was working perfectly previous to this, right?

I would consider uninstalling that motherboard driver you used first also, that has to be a suspect at this point.

A Catalyst install should do the motherboard also, since it's AMD.
