Windows 7: XFX 8500GT will not support Aero?

Windows 7 RTM Ultimate x64

it's probably either a bug in the advisor or it doesn't recognize your video card properly for some reason. i wouldn't worry about it. when i upgraded one of my many machines, it gave me some warning about a possible IDE driver conflict. it's a generic IDE driver, how can there be a conflict? anyway, i said f-it and did the upgrade anyway and everything worked just fine.

I've got an XFX 8600GTS and Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor also says it does not support Aero. However, my card does.

Obviously, the Advisor is in error.

If you can select Aero themes, adjust transparency, use Alt-Tab accordingly, etc, etc, etc, then the Advisor is in error.

2nd question, only if you want/need 64bit. Personally, I don't need/want 64bit at this time. Perhaps in the future, I will go with 64bit with a newer computer.

Dual Boot XP 64bit/Win7 Ultimate

I'm on XP 32bit which only sees 3.2gb of Ram but I have a total for 3.25gb of Ram(2x 1gb + 2x 512 + 256mb from the graphic card), so could this be the problem?
That advisor isn't actually seeing the full 256mb of my video card?

Binman, you should be fine. I also have an 8500gt. When you run the win7 upgrade advisor, scroll down towards the bottom and expand the section labeled 'devices' by clicking the 'see all devices' link. Here, you ought to see that your nVidia 8500gt is supported and compatible with windows 7. There is, however, a new windows 7 compatible driver available from nVidia's website located here: Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers Select your card and either 32 or 64 bit, whichever you decide.

Also, you can find specifics regarding the win7 aero system requirements/parameters here: What is the Aero desktop experience? TOwards the bottom of the page you will see an option to expand all aero system req's.

Also, i say that ideally you would go with the 64-bit system, as you are going to see better performance (you can check system benchmarkings and performance testing all over the internet, at places such as but remember that you MUST ensure that your motherboard and processor are 64bit compatible. not sure about your computers specs, but if it's an older machine and you arent using 64-bit versions of software, then getting 64 bit OS will do little for you. just my 2 cents. good luck!
