Windows 7: No sign of output from computer

Just yesterday did it start showing solid amber (It stopped working 5 days ago and at that time it flashed amber and showed solid white)

It is a desktop and the screen still blanks on sleep, but wouldn't it at least show the BIOS?

I doubt it is still under warranty. We've had it for over a year, but I will see if I can find the documentation.

Is there a Dell service tag Number on it ? If so what is it, so we can look it up !

Keep following the path with Doc, I'm just jumping in to answer your question.

Is this serious? Seems to be at this point, how serious we don't know. Serious is also a subjective term, it depends on your technical abilities. Some folks swap parts in an out without blinking.

Solid amber = Mobo or Pwr Sply, the two descriptions you gave in two different posts seem to point to an issue with power.
  1. powered up without hitting the power button (could have been already pushed in)
  2. won't shut down
I am by no means HW proficient enough to help you determine which component it is, so once again I'll defer further trouble shooting to other members.

Hi randomperson1,

Sorry I was away and was unable to check this thread. If the system is not completing POST and showing amber light intermittently our first guess would be power supply on the system.

If you are proficient on reseating the hardware on the system then kindly disconnect harddrive(s), optical drive, memory any PCI card inside the system. Then switch on the system if you see a Green or White light on the power button it means system is passing post to the stage where it tried to detect the memory.

If you get the white light connect the devices one by one to isolate the point of failure. If it still shows the amber light then reseat the ATX cable on motherboard. It would be 20 pin multi colored cable from the power supply to the motherboard.

Restart the system and if the amber light comes then you should consider replacing the power supply on the system.

If the system is under warranty then please contact me through a private message by clicking on my name highlighted in blue. On the next page, click the envelope icon and provide your service tag and contact information so I may access your system records.

And, if the system is out of warranty then you contact our Expired Warranty Support at the link below:

Thanks for the generosity anyway ICit.

Doc,

Great! I didn't know that was possible. Thank you!
Edit: I just looked it up and the warranty is indeed over.

Slartybart,

Well I am by no means experienced with this stuff. I've switched out a dvd drive before, but that's it. I guess it would make sense that it could be the PSU. Thank you for pointing this out.

SandeepP,

Thank you very much for these troubleshooting steps I will do them ASAP and explain the results. Hopefully I can find the problem through this.

Well, I think we are down to 2 things . Either the video on the MB, or the power supply. Since it is a slimline case that will be a special , probably Dell only PSU. Maybe Sandeep can give us a link to a price on it. I just looked on eBay, they are 250watt (low end) to 350watt (high end) from $25 to $50 plus. So if the one currently in your computer is 250watt, it may be just about worn out.

Well for my two cents worth try checking pin 8 (grey cable) on the 24 (0r 20 pin) socket if it is at (I think) 2.4v or less then the timer chip on the board will not allow the machine to power up because it means the PSU self test circuitry is finding a fault(s) in the unit itself. It is often a cause of a machine that loop reboots iself.
