At least uninstall the codecs. But the damage may already be done. But it's worth trying.

i'm sorry, i'm not trying to sound like a smart-@$$ or anything, but thats the real issue...i already have uninstalled all the codecs. i ran the microsoft Aero checker because that's one possible issue i ran across in my digging/research and it says my graphics card isnt compatible with Aero.

i'm searching now, but do you know of any possible "codec cleaners" or programs that do something like that?

As I said - the damage could already have been done. The problem with these codec packs is that they are collections from all sorts of sources and you never know what they do. Removing them is a BIG job.

Go to Start and type 'regedit'. Then hit Enter. The audio and video codecs are in

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

There you can delete them if you know which ones came with the codec pack.

ok, need some input. is there anything of merit here:5 Tools to Remove or Repair Broken Codecs and Filters and Fix Video Playback Problems ? Raymond.CC

    ?

and also, this website here:How to Clean Out Codecs | eHow tells me where to find codecs in the registry if i'm not mistaken? i'm attaching an image of what i found in the registry. I'm assuming i should leave the one about Fraps alone because i use that, but the others i don't know about. does anyone know more about registry stuff? LoL

i'm thinking maybe there's something left over from the codecs thats conflicting with Windows Aero?

LoL i think we posted at about the same time. i have an idea, whs, have you ever installed codecs? if not, can you take a snip of your registry and ill see if mine looks the same? i've read that windows 7 comes with default codecs or something of that sort. maybe i can make mine look like someone elses that hasnt screwed it up with codecs yet haha

I have never installed any codecs. Here are my snips - they did not all fit on a single page:

great! thanks whs. it looks like the only differences are my Fraps registry and a VIDC.RTV1 entry. soooo...i guess backup my computer and disable it first to see if it solves the problem? if so, delete it later?

i'm hoping this is related to the Aero not being compatible issue. really just not completely sure what to do though.

thanks for the help thus far!

ok well, bad news. there's no way that i found to "disable" that registry entry in question. so i made a restore point and just deleted it. the computer rebooted fine and seems to still run fine, but the screen glitch issue still happens. it happened well within 5 mins of being rebooted.

    so, any ideas anyone?

If it happens only after 5 minutes, it must be another process that throws a monkey wrench. Do you remember which programs you opened during that time.

And is there anything in the Reliability Monitor that could give you a clue.

it happened within 5 mins of being rebooted. and it continues to randomly happen throughout the day as long i'm not in a game.

there doesnt seem to be anything. ill attach the reliability history report.
