Is this configuration still good enough?

This computer is more than four years old now. It's obviously not the best desktop, but can somebody tell me where this computer stacks up? And a few really important for me questions: Does buying a new computer in parts cost me less? What is more vital - the CPU or the Graphics card (for gaming and video editing).
Here we go:
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+
RAM: 4GB DDR2 at 400Mhz
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
Gaming graphics: 2303 MB Total available graphics memory
Anything else you guys wanna see?

It is pretty dated to be honest. Your CPU upgrade options are limited due to the socket type and you'd really benefit from a quad core CPU. Upgrading the graphics would cause a bottleneck from the CPU. Ideally you'd want DDR3 RAM too. My advice would be to save for a new full system if you're considering heavy gaming and video editing.

the building a pc vs pre built argument will rage on for all of time!

these days the cost of both are very similar, with system builders only adding a very small mark up on components but then they do offer good warrantys.

building a system is better, thats my opinion, but it means youget to put in everything you want, full choice of customisation.

you also learn the process of building it, what needs to be done when things go wrong, airflow/cooling and my favorite cable management!

when it comes to video editing cpu is more important, the more cores and more ghz the cpu has the better,but you also need lots of ram as well. a decent gpu wont go a miss either.

for gaming you only need a quad core processor, a core i5 will do fine but if on a budget the 6 core amd fx6300 is a decent cpu and overclocks a dream!!.

for gaming at decent resolutions (1080p+) youll need a mid tier card. something like a gtx 760 or amd r9 280 to really make the most of modern games.

If your not a gamer for about $200 0r $300 dollars you could just double your ram and get a larger display that would probably make you happier than a newer machine

You really should just save up and then build yourself a new machine. For most modern games, both your GPU & CPU are sadly lacking. I would not even try video editing with your system, yes your system could do it but it will take forever.
