I have a video card with both a DVI and an HDMI output and a monitor with only an HDMI input. Should I connect my monitor to my PC with an HDMI cable or with a DVI - HDMI cable?

It doesn't really matter. DVI and HDMI are the same video signal.

If your monitor has built-in speakers, then HDMI would be your best option since it carries both video and audio. If your monitor doesn't have speakers, then either HDMI or DVI will work equally well.
