ATI Graphic Card Driver BSOD Error 0x00000116 ATIKMPAG.sys

Hi,
I have a Compac CQ42 which has an ATI Radeon 5430 as its graphics adapter. Anyhow, recently it started giving me these BSODs whenever I tried installing the video card drivers. The BSOD in question has the following error codes:

0x00000116 (0xFFFFFA8004260010, 0xFFFFFF8800439E02C, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000002)

ATIKMPAG.sys - Address FFFF8800439E02C base at FFFFF8800439800, DateStamp 4b86f5ba

I have uploaded the .dmp file created by the BSOD as well. Any suggestions if this is a software issue or a hardware one?
The computer works once I go to the safemode and disable the installed ATI drivers :/

Are you installing the video drivers from Compaq, or directly from AMD? If you have an OEM computer, you should always install drivers from the manufacturer. Manufacturers often do little things to the hardware/firmware for optimization/cost cutting/deliberate incompatibility that make it almost essential that you use only the manufacturer's drivers.

This is particularly true of laptops.

I have tried both and still am getting the same error. I tried switching windows as well as I have a license key for Windows 8 but apparently I can't install Windows 8 on the laptop as it just freezes after the mandatory system restart during the windows setup.
