is this by any chance a mix up of dual link DVI cable vs dual (ie 2) DVI cables or is it a duel between the 2 ?

my understanding of monitor connections :

DVI-D - graphics card socket that outputs a digital signal only (D = digital)
DVI-I - graphics card socket that outputs a digital signal, but also has analog pins (I = integrated)

a DVI-I socket can be used with an adaptor to drive a VGA monitor (VGA is an analog signal)

single link DVI cable - regular cable that will drive an HD monitor
dual link DVI cable - cable with extra connectors to enable higher monitor resolutions + performance

HDMI - a bit like DVI-D but with sound. HDMI and DVI are similar electrically - in the past I have used an HDMI (pc) to DVI (monitor) cable to hook up a DVI monitor.

that link does not work but if your monitor only has one output for dvi-anything it will be this one you need Amazon.com: C2G / Cables to Go 26911 DVI-D Male/Male Dual Link Digital Video Cable,Black(2 Meter/6.56 Feet): Electronics pick the length you need and profit:) my monitor has a single dvi-d Dual Link at 2560x1440 @60hz. Your monitor did not come with A dvi-d dual link cable out of the box?

it came with a single dvi-d cable for sum reason and when i use a duel dvi-d it says that the cable is incorrect is it possible that the cable is just faulty

It's this one right? ASUS VG248QE Black 24" 144Hz 1ms (GTG) HDMI Widescreen LED Backlight LCD 3D Monitor Height&pivot adjustable 350 cd/m2 80,000,000:1 Built-in Speakers - Newegg.com if so it needs Dual-link DVI-D and your cable is probably faulty instead of the monitor. I even have mine through a extension cable too so its not a length problem.
