Windows 7: No Pan and Scan Virtual Desktop in Windows 7

09 Dec 2010   #11

It's me again: I never used Corel Ventura, but I can imagine where the problem comes from:
CV will remember the positions of the external menus and applets, but only in respect to the hardware monitor.
(Internally GiMeSpace only moves the windows around on the given screen).
So the position of the restored menus and applets on the virtual desktop depends on the "pan position" of the virtual desktop at the time you open them.

GiMeSpace has a function to save and restore window positions, but you need to call the function from the tray icon. Did you try this function?
I can imagine that this could also be done automatically by GiMeSpace when opening a window, but when I suggested this to the author he wrote that this would be difficult.

I further thought of an additional app that could save and restore the window positions in respect to my "background image" (mentioned in earlier post), but until now I did not really need this, so I didn't invest more time into it.

I just had another idea: Do you know Virtual Machines (with VMware Player or VirtualBox)? You could place your CV into the virtual machine (VM) and on the host system let GiMeSpace handle the large VM's window.
I got to try this.

I know these are all workarounds, and we would like to have back our "good old" virtual desktop, but there are also some advantages with the GiMeSpace solution
- new windows and popups are always placed in the visual area
- they are by default never larger then the visual area
- you can swith between apps from the task bar

If I see that more people are interested I could invest more time to develop the above mentioned tool(s). If they work, maybe they can be integrated into GiMeSpace.

The pan-and-scan virtual desktop allowed me to set up the desktop with a resolution of 1280 x 800 on a desktop of 1920 x 1200. That results in programs, menus, task bars, etc. displaying at the larger 1280 x 800 resolution, not the tiny size of the 1920 x 1200 resolution. It also results in a desktop you can control.
The settings in Windows XP with an ATI card are:
Display Properties: 1920 x 1200
ATI CCC Monitor Attributes: 1280 x 800

But Windows 7 does not give you those choices.

In Windows XP you could place applications side by side and easily cut and paste between them.

This is very frustrating because I really like Windows 7. It is quite a great leap forward from Windows XP in all too many ways to list -- except for it preventing the use of a pan-and-scan virtual desktop.

Microsoft was conspiring with monitor manufacturers to encourage users to buy two and use two monitors instead of one -- which is exactly what's been going on today. Yet another example of the private sector behaving badly.

Do you really need the p&s VD ?

your d/s factor is 1920/1280^2 = 9/4
so you can manage with two monitors

it seems that you use the p&s VD for magnifing details only,
(true --- you are using a desktop of your monitor native resolution size)
why don't you use any magnification glass application instead ?

Would you be so kind and list "ways in which w7 is a great leap forward from Windows XP " ? please !

I agree. One can not produce a car without brakes. Why is it allowed to produce an OS without the P&S VD since a hardware support for it is included in each VGA compatible video controler?

Why does my Virtual XP desktop shows all of my Windows 7 desktop items
I have been running Virtual XP (VXP) under Windows 7 Pro (W7) for at least a year. Until a couple of days ago the VXP desktop had only about 10 items that I had put there myself, all being shortcuts to VXP programs, folders etc. Then suddenly I found the VXP desktop was full to bursting, most...

Hey all. I run Ubuntu on my other computer for work purposes and the only feature I really enjoy is the virtual workspaces which I can easily manage and switch between. Do any of you know a really well implemented app for W7 that will do this? Thanks!
