No display outputs using DVI-D to VGA adapter

Hi,

A client for our business requires dual outputs from a PC we built for them. The motherboard for the PC is the H81M-PLUS which has VGA and DVI-D on board.

We tested 5 different DVI-D to VGA adapters and on every one we weren't able to get any display on the monitor. When we attempted dual displays with one using the onboard VGA to a monitor with VGA and the other using the DVI-D to VGA adapter which lead to another VGA monitor of the same model it was able display the VGA to VGA but not the adapted display. Using the VGA to VGA monitor we went into the display settings and saw that windows could see the second monitor but just couldn't display it.

The machines we tested on also have the same motherboard.

In summary using the adapters we can't get any displays.

Is there any way to fix this without installing a graphics card?

Thanks in advance.

Those do not work cause they are passive adapters you need an active adapter as the vga is all analog and the DVI-D is all digital. You need something like this for the second screen Amazon.com: StarTech.com DVI2VGAE 1920x1200 DVI-D to VGA Active Adapter Converter Cable: Electronics

What you need is a DVI-D to VGA converter. These cheap cables and adapters don't do digital to analog video signal conversion. I would recommend checking Part # SCA-DVI-ANA-UN from KVMSwitchTech.

I think a lot of the confusion re DVI to VGA is due to the fact that there is a flavor of DVI that carries analog (as well as digital) - called DVI-I. The I stands for integrated.

If a mobo has a DVI-I socket, the above mentioned adapters/leads will work. I looked at the Asus link, and the OP has DVI-D.
