    Gtx 285

Well, I got the shiny new gear, and decided to go with the shiny new OS!

On the laptop, with an older nvidia graphics system, windows 7 is a dream.

On the desktop, with a GTX 285, not a chance. No windows update driver shown, and trying the 181.22 windows vista driver leads to a black screen and a scramble for safe mode...

Is my only option to sit and wait? I note that there were no 285 drivers for anything prior to about a month ago...

I'm debating putting in an older nvidia card for the time being, in the hope that the problem is eventually solved. Seems an awful shame though.

    (Current Windows rating: 1.0!)

    Hi britlion....

was the 285 working before windows 7 ..??

what PSU do you have..?? it may not be delivering enough to the card, is there any other machine you can try this card in..??

i know ppl are running the 285 & the 295 on windows 7 without issue.

    Hey Skunksmash.

The PSU is an Enermax ELT620AWT. 22 Amps on both 12 volt rails.

    http://www.enermaxusa.com/catalog/pr...products_id=82

The graphics card has never been in another machine, so I suppose it could have a fault. However, I'm typing this on it right now with the base windows "standard video card" driver. It even lets me go high res, if a little bit slow on updates. (I'm in 1920 by 1200).

If I install the Nvidia 181.22 64 bit driver, as soon as the "starting windows" logo disappears, everything goes black and stays there. I can't think the power draw to show the windows desktop is that enormous, compared to the standard windows driver. I wasn't even trying to run far cry 2 yet

Is that the version of the driver your friends are using - the windows vista one? Are they using 64 bit windows 7?

they are all on 181.22 or 181.20

the PSU should be ok, its got a combined 36A on the 12v....

have you tried to re seat the card..?? sometimes that's all that is required to solve a video issue..

there is always the possibility there is a problem with the 285...

can you see the card in the device manager..?? even without a driver the H/W should still be present...

    I got it working!

I pulled the card, tried an alternate, went back and reinstalled and it was good. Perhaps it was a dodgy power connector, perhaps it was a mis-seated card. Hmm.

Perhaps the video driver glitched on install.

Suffice to say GTX285 is running with the vista 64 driver.

Graphics score went up to 6.0 for gaming graphics. Meh. Ought to be better :) Probably will be with better drivers. For the moment, that's pretty good.

Thanks for the suggestions Skunksmash. I'd have been tempted to say "doesn't work yet" if you hadn't encouraged me to keep poking.

I'm having the same problem with the same card... just built my monster of a system... put in the gtx 285... can't get the auto run to run, so I copy the folder off cd to desktop, and click setup... it does nothing. 7 finds my card and installs drivers, but it's found as a "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter." I look at nvidias website, they say just run windows updates, I did... it didn't find anything. While in windows update I installed the update for my onboard network port, and after the restart... LAN quit working, had to uninstall LAN, and re-install without update to get it to work again. I also have a bunch of "System Interrupt controllers" under Other Devices. I supposedly installed my chipset drivers, etc off the MB cd (sound works fine), but I think Device manager is telling me they aren't working. Was VERY VERY happy with 7 before I installed it on this computer, and I want to stick with it. please someone offer a solution, otherwise I may have to re-install seven. if that doesn't work, I'll be forced to revert back to xp

I installed 181.22 vista drivers, and it seems to have solved video issues, however, there is still those other problems mentioned in my last post... anyone have any ideas?

On the LAn issue: You solved it. Don't do the update. (You should have been able to roll back, surely, instead of reinstalling?).

Anyway, I'm firmly in the camp of "if a hardware device is working fine, and there are no new features or problems to fix, don't install a new driver just because it is there". I've been bitten by that one too many times - windows update suggests a new driver for something, and it has been nonfunctional from that point on.

So, I'd say leave it alone and don't worry about it.

As far as the system interrupt drivers are concerned, my device manager shows the same thing. This is not causing me any problems at all at the moment, so I don't care.

If I found something not working on the motherboard, I'd be more worried. But hey, it's Beta software, and I'm confident it will be fixed eventually because it's a new board.

Before trying to fix something always ask if it's broken :)

Is the "not working device" causing you any issues? What isn't working exactly?

No, it's not causing any issues, but it's annoying. I'm from the camp where "A computer isn't complete until ALL drivers are installed and there are no errors under device manager." Honestly it's not causing an issue, and I'm not too worried about it (as you say... it is beta). However I was merely curious if someone had figured it out yet. If so, I'll do it just to rid myself of the annoyance.
