ok guy heres the step by step instructions to get these video cards working. This is how i did it after days of reading different forums and about inf files and how to write your own stuff in there. Ok forget the force ware that everyone is telling to use. Step 1. Go to Nvidia and download the latest driver save it to your desktop. Step 2. Go to device manager how ever you want to get there i go to start, control panel, then to hardware and sound, then device manager top selection all the way to the left. Step 3. Go to display adapter double click open the display adapter youll probably see vga adapter but what ever it says thats the one you need double click it theres tabs across the top click the one that says details, scroll down till you see hardware ID click on that. Where it says value (in the case of this computer that i was working on Sony Vaio VGN-AR630e) it is PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D&REV_A1 thats the number your going to need so copy and paste it in to a blank note pad or remember how to get back there. Step 4. Ok by now those drivers should be done downloading. Double click its going to come up with a screen that shows you where the files are going to be saved to something like C:\NVIDIA alright so go ahead and continue with the setup its going to extract the files to that location when the installer starts to go through the system check hit cancel when it cancels go to C:\NVIDIA\DISPLAY DRIVERS\WHAT EVER VERSION YOU GOT I GOT 285.62\INTERNATIONAL\WINVISTA_WIN7_64\INTERNATIONAL\DISPLAY DRIVER. So on mine the adress bar looks like this when im there C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\285.62\WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver. Now that your there you have to copy that PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D&REV_A1 you are going to have to paste it in a million places not literally but you have your work cut out for you. Take your time here you want to do this perfect. First open the List devices text now hit ctrl+f in my case the 0426 is specific to the Geforce 8400m gt 10de is what we all have nvidia geforce mobile gpu so you want to type into that search for word 0426 or coresponding number

    DEV_0DF4&SUBSYS_10ED17C0 "NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M "
    DEV_1050&SUBSYS_10E517C0 "NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M"
    DEV_1050&SUBSYS_10EC17C0 "NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M "
    DEV_1248&SUBSYS_10E717C0 "NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M"
    DEV_1248&SUBSYS_10E817C0 "NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M "
    DEV_0844&SUBSYS_408F17C0 "NVIDIA GeForce 9100M G"

    nvmt.inf:
    DEV_0405&SUBSYS_82271071 "NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS"
    DEV_0405&SUBSYS_82301071 "NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS "
    DEV_0407&SUBSYS_02841A92 "NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT"
    DEV_0425&SUBSYS_82271071 "NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS"
    DEV_0425&SUBSYS_82531071 "NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS "
    DEV_0426&SUBSYS_55841991 "NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT"
thats what i find thats mine so highlight that hole line
DEV_0426&SUBSYS_55841991 to right there paste in
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D&REV_A1 and then we are going to use a little common sense and make this look like the other as far as the prefix dont delete anything from the end that is card specific to your oem BS.
DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D&REV_A1. 0426 is graphics card specific but replace that with &subsys etc. so through all the txt files you have to do ctrl+f 0426 or coresponding and highlight it and replace it with your oem specific hardware name cause thats what that is PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D&REV_A1. Hardware device ID. So you search every .txt with ctrl+f 0426 and you replace ill do a couple of examples for you but not all inclusive like the last example.
    %NVIDIA_DEV_0426.1% = nv4_NV3x_Mobile, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426
    %NVIDIA_DEV_0426.1% = nv4_NV3x_Mobile, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D&REV_A1.
the one in yellow doesnt matter but it will find it anyway just replace the top line with the bottom line so highlight PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426 right click and paste you cant mess it upto easy just make sure you do it right. PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D&REV_A1 keep searching the document till its done.
    %NVIDIA_DEV_0426.1% = nv4_NV3x_Mobile, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426
    %NVIDIA_DEV_0426.1% = nv4_NV3x_Mobile, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D&REV_A1
organize the file by type till all the setup txt files are in a line then go through them and do this over and over install and you should be good repost if this didnt help. You can walk me through what you did and ill tell you if you did something wrong

    Hi Yatta

How many .txt files have to be edited? I could locate only 3, all in one folder and out of those I could find only one file ListDevices.txt with only one 0426 entry........

Can you send me this driver that you have modified or the .txt files plz, because I have identical hardware as you......

    Hello Torrentg/Yatta:

can you help me? I am running Windows 7 Professional 64bit on Sony Vaio VGN-SZ640, and the NVidia driver software I downloaded will not recognize my NVidia GForce 8400m GS, even though their Java online auto detector recognized it fine. My hardware Id is:
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0427&SUBSYS_9008104D&REV_A1
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0427&SUBSYS_9008104D
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0427&CC_030000
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0427&CC_0300

Yatta: I tried to follow your instruction, but there were so many "0427" and I was not sure what has to be replaced--sorry. Thanks for all your help.

Hello Gianni: thanks for the link. I must confess I read and re-read the instructions numerous times before it start to click -- maybe it is my lack of tech-savyness (is that a word??) but I finally downloaded the correct installation file from NVidia and made the change to the nv_disp.inf file and WOW it worked I even have the NVidia control panel also. I don't know if torrentg read this thread or not, but a big thanks to you. Thank you to Gianni for the link. My Sony Vaio has GeForce 8400M GS if anyone wants the edited inf file..just pm me. The instructions seems clear enough once I figure it out and completed the task, but I admit I had a tough time making the connection. Tkx again for a great forum.
