    go to the website for your latop maker, on the support page for your model, download the video driver for vista and install it.

    Thanks Tews, that's what I thought, but like I said - the windows driver updater said I already had the best driver running and I didn't know what my hardware was to check myself. However, I just tried the automatic update again, and it found and installed a new driver, and now it works fine! So I'll believe that you did something magic behind the scenes and sorted it for me. Cheers guys!

    Edit: running dxdiag again it now tells me my video card is an ATI Radeon X 1200 Series, where an hour ago it said it was 'Standard VGA Graphics Adapter', not sure how it worked it out in the interim, but it's solved the problem anyway!
