What is HDCP?

My graphics card says HDCP, but there is no explanation anywhere online of what it does. They tell you what it is. Some of them explain how it works. But there is no example or anything on exactly what happens or how to use it.

So what does it mean if my card is HDCP? Does that mean I'll be able to watch anything on any monitor? I don't get this.

The way I understand it is if everything in the chain is HDCP compliant, you ought to be able to playback protected High Def content.

The monitor, graphics card and playback device should all be HDCP.

I don't see the point in posting the wikipedia article that I found in 0.10 secs.

I think it means that some form of media itself would have some sort of HDCP encryption on it. So if you put it in your DVD drive, it won't play if your drive doesn't have HDCP decryption capabilities? IDK. And none of those articles or anything online seem to give any explanation about it other than what it is for and how it works. Nothing about what it actually does.

It protects content from being copied is what it does. Introduced in Vista.

What content? All it says is that my video card is HDCP. Is there no explanation in the entire internet about it.

So basically, you will not be able to watch anything HD media with HD encryption unless your monitor is HDCP compliant?
