I'm so grateful to you guys for this thread. I was all set to get one of these cards in Jan, think I need to reconsider now.

This issue asside how are AMD graphics drivers generally now? I haven't tried them since I had my trusty 9800.

You can go here and find out for yourself - CATALYST Drivers - Rage3D Discussion Area. Like any other forum, it's about troubleshooting and problems. If you visited the Nvidia forums you'd see the same thing :)

Well, I'm afraid I decided to give up on ATI and my Asus EAH5770. After much patching, driver updating and testing, display continued to lock up with driver error recovery some times, mostly requiring a hard reset.

Asus agreed to RMA the card, but would not cross ship, so I would have been without a card for at least 2 weeks. I was also unwilling to wait and see if the next ATI driver would solve the problem.

The reseller I bought it from agreed to let me return it, and instead I ordered an EVGA GTX275. Although it's physically larger, it fits in my case without any trouble at all (Antec P193).

So far so good, no lock-ups...
That sucks man. I have done two RMAs with Asus and both times they cross shipped. You have to fill out some additional paperwork for an advance RMA though, including providing your credit information.

Not to be a d#ck or anything but...

If you had the money to get a GTX 275 in the first place, why go for a HD 5770?.

Most of the GTX 275s out there right now are going for HD 5850-money.

I have an HD 5850 and I don't have any particular problems with the Catalyst 9.11 driver set for Windows 7. I'm going to try the just released 9.12's later today, but I have to get a GOOD backup, first.

exactly what i thought a 260 is abit more compareable

my Powercolor 5770 is working great with windows 7 ultimate 64bit.
But like has been mentioned ,i too experienced quite alot of random reboots when i first got the card, but now its been running smoothly since i ccc 9.11.

I RMA'd a xfx 48701gb and decided to get a 5770 despite not been quite as powerful.
but it was a great decision because the 4870's are noisy as hell ,and i can now play gpu stressfull games with zero noise from my card and the games i play ,ive hardly noticed any change in performance compared to the 4870 ,

and of course other +'s like dx11
    power consomption
    etc.

The GTX 275 cost me $65 more than the EAH5770. At the outset, I really didn't want to spend more than $200 on a graphics card, which is what led me to the 5770. And I think it's an awesome value. Seemed to work great when it was working, and I really liked the mix of outputs. But I had problems with it under Win7 64bit - what can I say...

Anyway, I ended up with the 275 for a couple of reasons, obviously technical specs it gave me more than I needed, but also my reseller actually had it in stock. After spending over $2,200 building this machine, what's an extra $65?

I've had zero problems with it so far. I've read that it runs hot, and then the fan gets loud, but I'm not much of a gamer, so I may never notice. I'm more interested in video editing, and taking advantage of hardware acceleration for H.264. So far, I have not heard the fan at all...

I'm quite disappointed to hear that Asus does cross-ship. I actually called them to confirm, and they told me NO. Maybe their warranty support is different here in Canada? I definitely would have given this a try first had the been more helpful.

    Sick deal mate!.

Most of the high-end GTX 275s are going for HD-5850-money nowadays (~$300).

    Congrats.

Interesting, I bought a 4890 and in my currency it was $145 cheaper than a 5850. Excellent card though for gaming at 1920x1080.
