Certain colors on laptop screen looking red and grainy

Some blacks are looking red and grainy, along with some other colors being weird. I've looked into this problem but no matter what I try I haven't been able to find a solution. I'm using a Dell Inspiron M5030 with a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Windows 7 driver. Any known solutions would be great. Thanks.

Hello and welcome jonathan mate soem system specs would be good System Info - See Your System Specs

Now just how old is this machine because this smacks of the screen losing the plot ie the pixels going down that is if the correct driver is installed for that graphics you have.

I got it in early 2011 so about 4 or 5 years old and I updated my system specs but some of them I couldn't find so I had to leave them blank.

Thats ok with the specs Jonathon well the problem is as you can imagine could be down to just about anything here as my Toshibas of about the same vintage have no issues like that.

Now you mention the driver was Windows 7 does that mean you got the driver using the Windows feature?? If so then it might be worth getting it from the manufacturers site because I am not a fan of Windows finding the driver.
Go to here Download Drivers and let the site detect your device and it will give you the correct driver.
Let us try this first because it is the most obvious and if that doesn't cure it then I would be inclined to look at the Dell support site for a driver and then into taking a closer look at the monitor screen itself.
Looking for the Dell site has turned up nothing though so go with what I have already laid out.

I've downloaded driver detect from AMD and all it said was that my driver is up to date and every time I run a scan to detect problems it says that my driver is running perfectly when obviously something is wrong.

Just a quick query - have you got access to another monitor? ie as one uses in a desktop if so it would be worth connecting that up to the laptop and see if the problem is still there. If so then it has to be the graphics chip or something that runs it. If not then the screen itself becomes suspect.

Now if you can do this all you need to do to shunt the graphics output to the outside monitor see my pic
