Wrong screen resolution on startup

I have my Windows 7 computer hooked up to my monitor (and mouse, keyboard, and speakers) through a KVM switch (I wonder if this is the root of the problem). When I boot up, I'd say about 10-25% of the time the screen resolution is wrong.

If I right click on the desktop and then click on Screen resolution, the window that pops up should say:

Display: S200HQL
Resolution: 1600 x 900

But when the resolution is wrong it says:

Display: (Default Monitor) on
Resolution: 800 x 600

Rebooting has always (so far) corrected the problem. Is there a way to permanently fix this? And do you think my suspicion that this is being caused because of going through a KVM switch is right? (This problem also occurred once after the computer feel asleep.)

The problem is that your monitor is not being detected all the time at start up. It's most likely due to the KVM. Have you tried using the system without the KVM for a while and seeing if it has the problem over a number of boots? It may just be that your KVM is switching to the other computer while you're booting. I have a KVM at work that is notorious for that. Or the KVM might be faulty.

I don't think the KVM is faulty. When I boot this computer up, the first thing I do is push the "Computer 2" button on the KVM. The light has never switched back to Computer 1 while the computer was booting up. (Nor are there any problems when both computers are up and running.)

I was hoping there was a setting, or something I can do or change that would help the problem. But if not, the problem is bearable, even if a bit annoying.

It's not that it is faulty but devices aren't portrayed correctly through KVMs. For me devices have only shown up as generic objects by the computer. You have to realize that you aren't connecting a monitor to the computer but the switch. Perhaps they don't have the capability to correctly transmit that information.

I run multiple comps through kvm to one monitor via vga (to a 4-3 monitor, 21" Eizo). individual comps to diff monitors hdmi or dvi. the vga conn ties them all together, use with 16-9 monitor(s). One comp -> hdmi, one dvi, = 4 comps, 2 monitors.
(Even have a two port kvm plugged into the four port kvm, = five comps, one of 'em only on vga, this one I'm using now) (I greatly prefer the 21" [4-3] monitor for web surfing)

Only problem I have ever had was when I tried using a kvm with usb conns for k & m. Never a problem with ps-2 plugs.

Monitor Choosing Wrong Resolution
I saw someone had posted earlier about what I think is the same issue, but the page disappeared. My TV is not going to the resolution that I set on the computer. It is going to 1920x1080 which looks awful since it is not its native setting. I wanted it set to 1360x768 which looks the best. Does...

Wrong native Resolution
Hello, Windows 7 says that my native resolution is supposed to be 1024x768 and shows me that number in the graphics menu. I have a Hyundai T91D 19" with 1280x1024 as native resolution and I am thinking that this is causing my bad video-quality and the slowdowns I experience in certain programs...
