Windows 7: Once Onboard Graphics Are Disabled, What If New Video Card is DOA?

Shouldn't I disable the onboard before installing the new card?

It should switch all by itself, you only disable the on board if it doesn`t.

I installed the new video card previously without disabling the onboard graphics. I had no display from the new card. The fan ran on the card, but that's it. Figuring it was DOA I sent it back to be replaced. So I've been thinking, what if the new card didn't really have a problem and it was something I did wrong, such as not disabling the onboard before I installed the new card.

you should have tested the card on another computer if possible before returning it.
