That's supposed to happen. It needs the standard vga driver to work at all, so you see a screen. Or if it installs a Microsoft version, in either case, then just visit ATI's site and install the driver from there.

Not sure this is it actually. I remember the old XP identification that sends you to 800x600 resolution, not this one. As soon as Windows loads for the first time it starts at 1280x1024, digitally signed hardware.

Alright, but you'd still be much better off installing from ATI's site after that.

You definitely want to be using ATI's driver, the one from MS won't likely let you access all of your card's features.

Yeah, that's not the point. What I was thinking of is that by initially getting MS's drivers my chances of getting proper resolution get slim, faulty programming on their end or smth, I dunno. Because, let's face it, I already had first install of ATI drivers over a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit twice by now, different sets of drivers and it didn't work. I think the solution lies in a registry hack or something. Frustrating.

MS doesn't make drivers. They're still ATI's just not as good as what you'll find on ATI's own site.

Ok so I uninstalled the drivers, restarted to safe mode, used driver sweeper, restarted to regular windows, installed new drivers, restarted and tried extending my monitor. Exactly the same. I present you an image of my many fancy resolution choices for my 42" CRT connected by component.

Do you break out to component from the S-Video port on the card or from one of the DVI ports?

S-video port.. I have a DVI to component cable which doesn't work between the tv and gfx card (doesn't even load bios screen on initial boot). Can I use one of those ATI DVI to component adapters to connect a component cable to my tv via the DVI port of my gfx card? (Sapphire HD4850 Toxic Edition).
