strange, i have my old e8400 that i used to run at 4.22ghz on air and that did eventually shut down from over volting it for soo long, so i assumed it was dead (as my system would boot with an old e2140 but not the e8400) so i got the Q9550, but now the e8400 is mildly overclocked sitting in my HTPC and has been for several months. i have never managed to destroy a Intel cpu, i even lap all my cpu's to reduce temps, but on the other side of the grass with the older AMD's i have heard a few ppl say that they overheat and crap themselves.
my system has been playing up the last couple days, im pretty sure its my mobo though, it shows in the voltage page (with the values and current settings) that the ram is set at 1.8v and showing current value of 2.6v, then if i go into the performance monitor page to check the live voltage readout and temps, its running the ram at 1.47 and i cant get it any higher.
so thats another problem i have now, the mobo isnt even 12 months old and cost almost $700.
so it might be ANOTHER RMA!
haha wow well.... the only computer we have that still has a intel in it is my dad's old p3
everything else we run has a amd in it, the one i'm on now is almost five years old, and mine is about a year and my bro's about two.... never had a problem with any of them
if the i7 was never introduced, i would consider an AMD system, but i suppose time will tell who will win the next round. LMAO.
im emailing EVGA about my mobo, but im worried as i have installed better chipset coolers and do not have the original cooler that they might void my warranty, although i have heard EVGA has the best warranty and support out there.
TBH i think i may have shorted out a resistor near the CPU power connectors when i was doing something, but why would a resistor on the other side of the mobo affect the ram voltage? usually they keep voltage components nearest the objective to minimise current loss and leakage. hmmmm i may have to figure out a way of testing it, or if my xfx 790i has the same resistors on it i might try swapping them onto my EVGA. i have not had much luck this month. i have tried using different ram sticks, so it is looking like a hardware fault or even the northbridge processor has faulted somehow. now i have to run my ram underclocked at 1333mhz, and my FSB is at 1500, any higher it crashes due to the mem voltage. hopefully EVGA will come back with something good. i loved this mobo, like i had raised and born it myself.LOL!
Oh and ThePizzaMan, with your Sig where you have HD5970! at the end, you should put FTW after it

OK im bringing up this thread again, as i have decided to build a new system....this is what i have researched and chosen:
this time i going for future proofing rather than the biggest and best at the time (like my other stupid decisions)
i7 870 (you will see why due to the mobo)
Asus P7P55D-E Deluxe (sata 3 6gb/s and usb 3.0 but not i7 9xx compatible due to the socket) ---couldn't find the x58 to support sata3 and usb 3.0
Seagate XT 2TB sata 3 6gb/s hdd
i will use my old 4x2gb g.skill ram as the Asus mobo uses dual channel, but still gets close speeds to tri channel x58 boards.
and the last decision is the graphics card(s)
x2 5870 or x1 5970
downsides:
5970 cops more heat
5970 is underclocked to 5850 speeds (maybe to reduce heat?)
x2 5870 require more power (slightly)
x2 5870's uses more slots (not that it bothers me as there will be no other cards in this build)
x2 5870's may have micro stutter due to x-fire?
so what are some thoughts between the 2 cards?
alot of other ppl seem to say go with the x2 5870's when i was researching.
and of course i will prob BUY...yes buy win 7 pro full OEM.
