New GFX company enters the fight.

It's been a while since a PC graphics company has made a big challenge to the big Three (Intel, Nvidia, ATI) in terms of supporting games. The last such company was 3dfx who championed the 3 acceleration movement in the late 1990s but couldn't keep up the pace and was sold to Nvidia.

Today a new company called Caustic Graphics has officially announced its presence with claims that their PC graphics product will be able to out perform current solutions by up to 20 times. It also claims that their second-generation product, due out in early 2010, will have 200 times (and that's not a typo) the performance of current solutions. Caustic Graphics will base their graphics product on raytracing, a graphics technique that allows for highly realistic looking 3D graphics. Raytracing has also proven to have issues with performance in the past but Caustic claims their technology "enables highly parallel CPUs and GPUs to massively-accelerate raytracing, putting it on par with rasterization and resulting in cinema-quality 3D delivered interactively on low-cost PCs."

The San Fransisco-based Caustic plans to reveal more info about their first product in April 2009. At the moment they are targeting high end computing needs but we suspect that PC gaming is also in their plans.

Good to see a bit of competition, I think it's been long overdue for a bit of a shake up in the GFX industry, nice find Mitch

Interesting... Think i will stick to ATi cards though.

They will have to really deliver to convert people from ati/nvidia..

    Well, they talk the talk....

200x performance? It sounds too good to be true. Be fantastic if it was.

    i know........ & its ''PASSIVE''

it could be quite interesting to see them take the crown by leaps & bounds, or to see them crash & burn beneath the raw power coming from the GREEN corner & the RED.....

Would this not need games to be specially written to support it..current games make extensive use of textures and rasters..this would need to change if a card optimised for raytracing was to be any good

yep, coding would have to change drastically, so even if this thing does what it promises, I wouldn't expect to see it adopted and in mainstream gaming machines in less than a decade.

However, if it really is a low heat/passive card with phenomenal performance.... developers: start developing

I wished Matrox would come back, I still use one of their g400 marvels in an xp system for the 2nd monitor video out as a video jukebox set-up, reason i always used it, is the 2nd monitor out is never upset by anything that happens on the first monitor, no matter what application you bomb out with on screen 1, 2 still stays stable.

I did try to upgrade it some 3 three years ago to an nvidia, but if you got a critical stop for an application etc the full screen video on monitor 2 would fall back to being windowed fullscreen video.

Currently using an ati 3450 for playback on my htpc, but the 3d is terrible but as a cheap card its fine for dvd/movies via dvi/hdmi

if anyone knows of a 'rock solid 2nd monitor out' suitable for dual monitor use etc, i'd like t now
