Windows 7: External Display won't work

External Display won't work

I'm fairly certain this is a driver problem, but I still haven't been able to solve it.

Before upgrading to 7, I was using my laptop as my primary dvd player, since I didn't have on. I'd hook my laptop into my TV using a an S-video to Composite, extend the display and play the movie. Worked every time.

But after installing 7, I haven't been able to get my TV to display the signal anymore. When I've got the cable plugged in, the computer recognizes that I've got another monitor set up, and it gives me all the options (extend, duplicate, etc.) but my TV doesn't show anything other than a blue screen (the default when it isn't receiving a signal).

Since I thought it was a driver problem, I downloaded the latest drivers (released last month) for my card (nVidia GeForce 8600m), but even after install I still don't get a signal on my TV.

Unfortunately I don't have another TV or computer to test the connection with, but before the upgrade I was using the same computer, same TV, and same cable, so I know it's not a hardware compatibility problem.

The computer says its outputting a signal, but the TV says it isn't receiving one.

Any one know how to fix this?

a shot in the dark, but try connecting the tv to your computer before you turn the computer on.

I am having this same issue... however, I am able to extend the display if I change the Multiple Displays option to Duplicate and apply changes, then go back to Extend these displays.

However, I have to do this upon every reboot, so it is extremely annoying.

Thanks for the replies, but unfortunately it's a no-go.

Connecting the tv to the laptop before turning the laptop on doesn't seem to change anything, and I can't even get the TV to duplicate my laptop screen, either.

Don't know if this helps or not, but my TV is definitely getting some kind of signal. Whenever I change from one option to the other (say, from "Duplicate" to "Extend" or back) the TV screen will blink once, much like the laptop will, only I still don't see anything other than the blue screen.

Saebinz, be glad you can get it to do that, cause I can't get it to display anything at all.

Are you sure you are selecting the correct input on your TV? Most have the ability to use RGB (VGA) or Composite plus HDMI if you have that capability from your computer. I can send my Desktop to a LCD TV using a USB dongle and a wireless USB receiver connected to the TV. It may require some tinkering, but what on a computer does not? Good luck.

Yeah, I'm using the correct input, and it's the exact same one I was using when I had Vista installed. I have an S-Video to Composite cable.

I am having the same problem, brand new computer hp dv6-1375dx. I will follow this thread, hopefully we will figure it out.

On a side note, with my set up I installed Ubuntu as a dual boot and ubuntu allows me to use my TV but Windows 7 doesn't (with the exact problems descibed above)

I am having the same exact issue with windows 7 x64 with an nvidia 880GT. I can duplicate the display, but when i try to extend it just flashes the screen. when i hit detect it will even pop up my background for a second, but then it goes away. I tried going from duplicate to extend as well, but it doesn't work.
