Windows 7: Sapphire HD 3850 PCIe

Dear friends,

I have just built my very first PC but am having problems with the above graphics card. In device manager I am able to see that my HD 3850 is being detected, but I cannot see any of the monitors I have plugged into it.

I have updated the latest version of ATI Catalyst (10.1) and installed and run that.
I have also tried the ATI Hotfix software.

I know that there is a way of updating the cards's hardware ID into the setup executions. Please can anyone give me a little more guidance on that?

Simon welcome to the forums.

Unless you need it for more than two monitors, take the 7000 out as that is the cause of the problem. Reason for that is the 3850 is using the WDDM 1.1 driver, and the 7000 is using the WDDM 1.0 (if you're lucky and not just whatever default driver Windows installed for it) and Windows is defaulting to the lowest common denominator for the driver and using the 7000 driver.

It is if you want the 3850 to work properly. There have been a few threads on here about this same problem and the solution was to remove the older card, and if needed for more than two monitors to get another of with a different make (Nvidia for example) or a newer card of the same make that uses the same generation of driver.

Have seen threads where some have tried it with a Nvidia card from the 8xxx series and up, with a card from an earlier generation and the same thing happens. Now if the second card was a non WDDM 1.1 Nvidia card in your case, the problem wouldn't occur (two totally different drivers, not just different driver models).

Thank you Stormy13 for some great advice. The card now runs with no problems, but it is a tad noisy. You're my hero! I spent ages trying to sort this out and it was elimentary my dear Watson.

Can you recommend any compatible good PCI card to go with it. I also have PCI expansion slots on my GA-EP45-UD3L motherboard, but don't know whether they are on any help.

Please do you know of any suitable alternative PCI cards?
...just so that I can take my pick between them.

Also, would I have problems with this 64bit card on my 32bit system?

Another thought... is crossfire possible?
