    nVidia "nView Desktop Manager"

I know that "nView" is not installed on Vista or Windows 7.
But, It is in the driver bundle pack, known as nview.cab..

    I run 2 Graphics cards (both GeForce 9400 GT, one PCIe and one PCI), and 4 monitors, 2 ea Hanns-G HW191D's (19" Wide), 1 Hanns-G JC199D (19" Sq) and 1 AOC LM720 (17" Sq).

I use them on my Windows XP x64 OS, and design and develope projects a lot. My desire is to not allow windows to span across monitors. I use my each monitor for very specific uses.
One to monitor all operations in my system, one for monitoring my network and all activities by any of my other computers as well ( I have 7 that run quite often), and the other 2 for my design work and testing as well as any of my e-books or web sites on the research for my design work.

With Windows XP x86 and x64 the nView Desktop Manager is always available so I can set it for any specific application or function that I need.

But on Windows Vista (which I quit using, what a waste of money ) and Windows 7 (which I am testing ) do not have the ability to set any of my programs the way I need them to react. They can span monitors any time, especially when I try to run computer simulated actions or activities for diagnosing my designs.

Hope this didn't bore you to sleep.

    My Question,
Is there a way to install the "nView Desktop Manager" on Windows 7?
I know that Win7 is the same core kernel as Vista. Does any one have any knowledge about the compatability of the nVidia drivers and software in the "Driver Bundle" packs for this windows core?

I have tried over and over again to get info from the nVidia Sites (including the basic forums and the Developer forums) but get no answers.

First make sure you have the "absolute latest" update from NVidia since that will likely be the Vista/7 beta version seen. I ran into that problem putting the ATI Catalyst 9.2 on 7 and no games would run seeing the OpenGL error come up. Once the 9.3 being the new Vista/7 beta not just Vista update went on... surprize! the games ran like they were new.

For regulating desktop wondering problem you may have to look at a 3rd party program you get running on 7 like Ultramon or another that takes over for the desktop manager. For seeing the Vista equivalent of the NView installed and working you may have to right click on the installer's executable for the compatibility tab.

The other option available for the first time in 7 is the use of the troubleshoot compatibility option that resolves problems by creating registry entries to set the mode as long term over one time. Some of the most reluctant programs and a few games as well that refused to go on Vista are now running on 7!

    Hey Night Hawk
    Thanks for the reply.
A couple of things I know about.

I have the latest Windows 7 x64 beta version installed on my Win7 x64 OS, It works pretty good so far, but the "nView" part of the driver pack is not installed. I even tested it in the compatibility (vista) mode. Which it still didn't install the "nView" part.

UltraMon does not claim compatibility in Windows 7 yet (since last time I checked with them, last week).

I don't know of any other 3rd party app that can control the windows or apps settings like I require. (Do you know of any?).
And I have never seen that ATI has that capability. That is mainly why I went to nVidia Cards and software.

    Thanks Night Hawk

Ultramon has a number of issues with Win7, just read their forums for an idea.

    Actual Window Manager

I just found this, and they claim that it is compatible up to Windows 2008 RC2 x64 version.
Here is the link "Actual Window Manager" .
I am still reading there files and forum info, so far It seams prety good. I am going to try it in Win 7 x64 tomorrow when I get the time.

    edit:
So far What I have read in their forums and info files is that it can do almost every thing that nView can do, and a couple of extras, like modified themes.
After I try it, (mainly on the functionality I need) I report back.

    Hey swarfega,
I have already looked at the UltraMon forums, that is what I meant in my previous post. It aint that good in Win 7

Before the dsl connection here suddenly got bumped I was trying to answer the Ultramon alternative MaxiVista seen at MaxiVista - How it works That provides you with a better control over the arrangement as well as extension or mirroring across multiple monitors.

The Start64 site has a page on that seen at 64bit and x64 - MaxiVista - Desktop Extension - 64bit

Both Ultramon and MaxiVista go back a few years seeing 2004 reviews on items like the 2.5 version released. Both ATI and NVidia do see their own hypervision however.

The key to getting anything to run on 7 at this time however if for XP or Vista is to right click on the installer's or main executable after installation and selecting the troubleshoot compatibility option now seen in 7. For 3rd party programs like either of those two that would be one idea.

The updates labeled for Vista/7 at NVidia seeing nview included like the Cat 9.3 by ATI would be the thing you want as well. It's a tuff call for 7 just now reaching the RC stage to put a guaranty on anything since the updates for 7 would be beta as well.

    Answer

From nVidia - they dropped (seemingly permanently) nView for Vista on GeForce cards....

*but* you could always try DisplayFusion: Multi-Monitor Taskbar and Desktop Wallpaper | Binary Fortress Software and see if that helps - I have a dual monitor setup, for instance, and with DF (not entirely sure if it is because of DF or if it is because of better multiple monitor suport in Win7) I moved my Thunderbird window to my secondary monitor, so I can check email and surf simultaneously - and now Thunderbird always opens in the secondary window, no matter how many times I close it, after warm boots, cold boots, etc...

That figures! Once Vista and 7 starting taking over by adding in a new support NVidia simply let that go. The other two programs are a bit older while the MaxiVista seemed a little more updated. At least you know that one sees full support for 7 as the 3.0 version is also on the way for that. DisplayFusion Version Comparison | Binary Fortress Software

Actually, Jon sent out a tweet earlier that says the following:

Windows 7 support in DisplayFusion 3.0.3 is done. It looks and worked awesome. I can't wait to release it!

If it will work there you have it! With 4 monitors LarryLaser will need something there to work with. You want to see something that will be updated as well as simply able to run on 7 for the long term.
