Had Aero in RC, but not in Win7 Retail?

    Hey guys,

Really bummed on this. I had been running the beta of Windows 7 for awhile and finally had the chance to buy and install a retail version of Windows 7 before the March 1st deadline.

Well, now that I installed the retail version I can't use Aero. I had Aero in the beta version so why is it telling me my video card is not compatible for it now? Why would they [Microsoft] take something that worked perfectly fine in the RC and take it away in the retail version? My Inspiron E1505 was perfectly capable of Aero in the RC version.

Is it just a driver that I'm missing?

Yes, you need the right driver for your GPU.

Did you install the correct video drivers for your graphics card? The drivers Windows installs automatically are usually just placeholders to give you at least the minimum funtionality over the device. Make sure you go grab the latest video drivers.

After that, make sure you run the WEI Assessment as sometimes Windows won't turn Aero on until that's been run at least once :)

Possibly, or as I've found of late, you've just not chosen an Aero theme, and before you say you have, double check because others said they had, when they hadn't.

Generally speaking, with a Dell, you're better off getting your drivers from them.

For your card, they will probably only supply Vista drivers -- but you can use them.

If you go to the AMD/ATI site and download drivers from them, make sure the filename has "legacy" in it -- otherwise, the drivers will NOT work with your card.

BTW, just checked a few minutes ago, and the most recent "legacy" drivers are Catalyst 10.2.

Thanks for all the help everyone! Alas, I tried to download the most recent Vista drivers for the video card and it promptly told me that I had an invalid operating system. :? I just don't understand it - the default drivers worked perfectly fine on Windows 7 RC beta, why did they have to change a good thing?

    Vista? What about 7 drivers?

There are 3 cards listed for that model on the support page, which is why it helps to fill in your System Specs, because there might be 7 drivers available as Frostmourne suggests.
