Intel 82865G Graphics Controller for Windows 7

You can use the following link to download the driver:

    Drivers and Downloads

It will download a self-extracting .exe file, by default it unzips to C:\Dell\Drivers\[driverID#]. It will automatically try to run setup.exe, but will fail with an error.

The trick is to right click on the setup.exe file and run the compatability checker with the recommended settings, then run the setup.exe file as administrator (right-click, then run as administrator). It will install, then prompt you for a reboot.

I know it's a little sloppy, but I can very firsthand that it works on Dell Dimension 4600 (P4 3GHz, 4GB of RAM).

It runs remarkably fast on the machine. Anyway, the above instructions should get you through the installation, but if you still have issues, post the EXACT error you're getting (a screenshot might also be helpful) along with the specific steps you took to arrive at that error - be as detailed as possible. Your details will help others find this solution and not have to spend hours or days tearing their hair out to find a solution to an otherwise trivial problem.

    It worked for me.

I also have a Dell Dimension 3000. I googled for a solution and found this thread. Since I see no positive response...I'll post mine.

I did just as directed, installing the driver from the Dell support site:
    Drivers and Downloads

I ran the install, my computer would not fully reboot, so I did a cold boot. Then the pw prompt showed itself with the higher resolution and all is working now. Thank you.

    Problem Fixed

Tried loads of suggestions with no luck then read this simple solution on a blog.

Went to BIOS on start up and adjusted Video card buffer from 1MB to 8MB, very painless. Gave me back all the configurations for screen display and resolution etc. Oh what joy!!

PS I have Dell Dimension 3000/82865G GFX/ Dell E173Fpc monitor.

    Hope it works for you

    Possible need for aditional step...

Thanks to your answers, I have learned sooo much and you have saved me and my computers so many times; time to give back.

What I have to add: I am working with my boss's Dimension 4600 and had the same exact video card compatibility problem causing terrible resolution. I followed Netharius' process and it worked, but only after adding a step: If the installer program fails due to OS compatibility, right click the setup file, click Troubleshoot compatibility. Let Windows do its thing, then when it prompts you, click "start now".

The setup program should run and the rest of the process worked like a charm after many long hours of searching for answers.

THANK YOU, you saved me from downgrading to XP...again...

I recently came across this problem when installing win 7. If you go to control Panel>System>Driver Manager you should see that windows installed a generic vga adapter driver for your graphics card.

I installed any number of drivers from Intel in the hope that one of them might work and that I could get a decent resolution and colour. I found a post which some decent and helpful person posted and I will pass this on here to prevent anyone else wasting hours. Reboot your machine, go into the BIOS settings (press F2 at the boot screen, sometimes varies) stay with me ---> look for graphics memory, my setting was under a category marked Legacy. When you have found it change it from 1mb to 8mb, save settings and exit. This allowed me to adjust the resolution by right clicking in the desktop screen and selecting "Screen Resolution" ---> job done.
