    Just upgraded to 7, no Graphics Card appearing


    Hi,

    I just recently (today) upgraded to 7 from Vista. I did a clean install because I was running 32 bit and wanted 64 bit. Everything installed fine except the computer is no longer showing that I have a graphics card. It is a Dell laptop. When I upgraded a different computer 7 automatically detected and installed the drivers for that graphics card.

    In this computer, however, the graphics card does not even appear. It is not in Device Manager or System Information. Both programs just say all that is installed is a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.

    Does anyone know how to fix this problem and make the computer detect the graphics card?

    Unfortunately no. I got it a year or so ago and haven't ever had a problem. I don't want to open up the bottom of the laptop and look either. I don't really know where to go because the system is not even detecting that there is a graphics card plugged into.

    are there any stickers at all (other than the MS Hologram) that identify the machine?
    there are usually at the bottom of the computer and wouldnt need any type of disarming...

    well it obiously does as it shows something on the screen...
    if you dont know then try using windows update and see if it can recognize the card...
    if it still does not recognize it then try start and type system information and then go to components and then display ...
    take a pic of it...

    Yeah, there is a service tag. I just went to Dell's website and plugged it in. They say the specific model isn't completely compatible with 7. They suggest downloading vista drivers and using them but I don't see what good this will do if the computer can not actually see the hardware.

    The model is a Dell XPS Notebook M1530

    installing the vista driver should allow the Windows to recognize the video adapter... :)

    Type system or msinfo32 into start/search, go to system information and it will give you the model info

    most likely using geforce 8600M GT
    these should be what you need (if you have 32 bit 7)...
    NVIDIA DRIVERS 195.62 WHQL

    Ok, well I am downloading the 64-bit driver for Vista now. I hope this works. I'll post more if this doesn't resolve it. Thanks
