Black display after HDMI is unplugged

    Hi guys!

I've faced with a problem of black laptop's display after unplugging my TV (connected via HDMI). I suspect this happens because after connecting my laptop to TV the TV's display becomes a primary one and laptop's display as a secondary one. Then after disconnecting both devices Windows don't merely sets laptop's display as a primary.

Reboot does not always solve the problem but sometimes.

Connecting an external monitor to laptop always solves the problem ~ one external monitor is connected laptop's display is turning on. Then I'm rebooting the PC with external monitor unplugging during RAM calculation...

I've tried to roll back drivers for video card, tried newest drivers, but this didn't help.

    Any advice is much appreciated.

    Configuration:
    Windows 7 Ultimate 32
    Nvidia GeForce 8800
    Philips 42-8404

It sounds like your computer doesn't realize that your television is being disconnected. I think most monitors send a continuous signal and once it breaks the computer knows it's been disconnected.

Instead of just unplugging the television, try switching your main display (laptop) to the primary and only display whenever you want to switch. That way, when you disconnect it from the television its not even sending a signal.

Oh yeah, I've been thinking about such an approach also, but the problem is that the possibility to make the laptop's monitor as a primary one is disabled. Well, I tried to simply shut down the TV, but this did not help.

And also, trying to switch using Win + P also did not work well in most cases.

That seems quite odd... You should be able to open NVIDIA Control Panel and either uncheck the TV or check the Laptop and then uncheck the TV.

For example, on my setup I would check Apple Color LCD (Laptop Screen) then uncheck Acer x223w (LCD Screen).

You can reach that control panel by going to:
Control Panel > Appearance & Personlization > NVIDIA Control Panel > Set up multiple displays.

If you don't have it installed, download the latest NVIDIA drivers for your card:

Well, when I can't switch back to the laptop's monitor using "WIN + P" I'm opening the NVIDIA and there is no laptop's monitor over there - the only TV. That's it.
