Windows 7: Can't get a native resolution

Can't get a native resolution

Running Build 7100

I have a nvida 7600GT using Driver version 8.15.11.8581

My monitor is a Acer AL1916w (19" wide)
It's native resolution is 1440x900

I am unable to achieve this, it seems Windows 7 can not recognize my monitor and defaults it to a generic PNP Monitor. The cable is a VGA cable with a DVI adapter to my Video card. The cable is unfortunately built in so I can not swap it with a true DVI cable.

I have been unsuccessful in finding any type of driver that is compatiable. The Driver directly from Acer is xp and there is not exe so I can not run in a compatibility mode, as well as trying to up date it via device manager and pointing it to where the files are is unsuccessful ..

Any one have any fixes or work arounds ?

Thanks guys, my first post here, look forward to ebing apart of the community!

Run this and save the output. It will tell me what capabilities your monitor is reporting through your DVI adapter to the video card, and then to the video drivers and finally to Windows and the Screen Resolution control panel. Hardly any monitors are recognized by name in Windows Vista or 7. That's pretty much legacy feature for monitors that are not PnP. http://www.entechtaiwan.com/files/moninfo.exe

Baarod, thanks for the reply, how ever I am a neophyte with this program, I installed it and ran the executable, but all I am getting under Display IDs are samples. Behold

I am not sure if this is live info or if these are samples as it implies.. Further more I do not see any options to actually tell it to do something beyond saving the sample information .. Please advise, and thanks for your patients.

You need a new adapter. Your monitor has an EDID but your video card can't see it because your adapter won't pass that information through. I've never created an EDID from scratch -- all my work takes the incorrect information from the EDID that the manufacturer provides and modifies it to fix the resolutions and refresh rates (and even gives the monitor a real name in device manager!) What this is telling me is that neither Windows and the graphics hardware/driver OR Entech's direct access to DDC (Display Data Channel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) can access the monitor's capability data.

You need a new adapter OR if you can provide me with all the info that's listed by MonInfo like this I can try to build you a new monitor driver from scratch:

Code:
Monitor
  Model name............... MP-32DB
Windows description...... Astar MP-32DB (EDID Override)
  Manufacturer............. AAA
  Plug and Play ID......... AAA2726
  Data string.............. Astar
  Serial number............ n/a

  -------------------------
  EDID revision............ 1.3
  Input signal type........ Digital
  Color bit depth.......... Undefined
  Display type............. RGB color
  Screen size.............. 710 x 400 mm (32.1 in)
Power management......... Standby, Suspend, Active off/sleep
  Extension blocs.......... None
  -------------------------
  DDC/CI................... n/a

Color characteristics
  Default color space...... sRGB
  Display gamma............ 3.55
  Red chromaticity......... Rx 0.639 - Ry 0.329
  Green chromaticity....... Gx 0.303 - Gy 0.583
  Blue chromaticity........ Bx 0.143 - By 0.100
White point (default).... Wx 0.318 - Wy 0.330
  Additional descriptors... None

Timing characteristics
  Range limits............. Not available
  GTF standard............. Not supported
  Additional descriptors... None
  Preferred timing......... No

Standard timings supported
     720 x 400p at 70Hz - IBM VGA
     640 x 480p at 60Hz - IBM VGA
     640 x 480p at 75Hz - VESA
     800 x 600p at 75Hz - VESA
    1024 x 768p at 75Hz - VESA
    1600 x 900p at 60Hz - VESA STD
Get as close as you can using the website, tech support and the manual and I'll just do what Acer's firmware engineers do -- translate the monitor capabilities into an EDID. Only I'll then use it to create a special kind of display driver that's normally used to override a BAD EDID not take the place of a missing one. It should work but I've never tested it...

Baarod,
thanks again for the info. Here is the cut and past from Moninfo, however I do not know how valuable it is as I still do not know if it is even current info or just a sample. If this is not what you need then please point me in the right Direction.

OK, well this was quite an adventure but I think now I have the tools, VESA specs and math down to the point where I can manufacture monitor drivers. I can't guarantee that this will work since you don't actually have an EDID to override but it should work (in theory). One thing you have that I need is your monitor's .ICM file. You need to put that in the same directory to which you unzip the attached .INF file. Also, I have no capacity to create signed driver catalog files at this point so you will be warned that this driver is not digitally signed. I don't really think we need to get Microsoft involved in this, do you?

So, without further ado, download this kaxfenix.zip, unzip it to a working directory, copy the .ICM file from your original monitor .INF package to that working directory, start device manager and update your monitor driver manually. It will never automatically choose an unsigned driver so you'll have to use the "have disk" method to directly select the new .INF file. Once it's installed, log off and back on again and try your new resolution. If it fails try rebooting -- whether that's required appears to be up to the video card and driver.

Let me know what happens please as I put about 20 hours of work into this!
