    Intel 915GM and Aero

So, is this true that the Intel 915 GM integrated graphics can not handle something like Windows 7's Aero.

I just installed 7 on my brothers few year old HP dv4000 or something like that. it has Intel 915 GM or GMS driver or so. and I can't enable Aero. I read there was a fix for this in Vista. so I'm wondering if there's anything for this on 7

    Thanks!

    Nope.

Are you looking for drivers for Windows Vista* for an older Intel® graphics controller?
Windows Vista supports two different graphics driver models: the Windows* Display Driver Model (WDDM) and the Windows* XP Driver Model (XPDM or XDDM). WDDM drivers provide the 3D graphical user interface experience to users. XPDM drivers provide an interface that visually resembles the Windows XP user interface and do not support Windows Vista premium features such as the Microsoft Aero* user interface.
Only XPDM drivers** are available for the following older Intel® graphics controllers:

    • Mobile Intel® 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset Family
    • Intel® 82915G/82910GL Express Chipset Family
    • Intel® 82865G Graphics Controller
    • Intel® 82852/82855 Graphics Controller
    • Intel® 82845G Graphics Controller
    • Intel® 82830M Graphics Controller
    • Intel® 82815 Graphics Controller
    • Intel® 82810 Graphics Controller

So it's a No go, and a driver update isn't coming ever.

sorry didn't read far enough, basically they wont release a driver cuz it doesn't meet M$ Spec for it. but it would work, but they can't release it.

Maybe I'll find a hacked driver. We'll see

BTW, whatever you read about a "fix" for this in Vista is also not true.

I've been using a 915-chipset laptop since the XP days, tried every "fix" that came out in Vista, and some recent ones posted here on sevenforums -- and NOTHING gets Aero to work. Period.

However, there are some fairly decent themes in the Customization forum for Win7 Basic that can at least add some color to your taskbar and windows.

My Laptop came with the same chipset. It was XP pro and I put Vista Business on it... nope, no way will it ever be able to have Aero glass.

The short version (if you're impatient): The WDDM Vista driver spec came out long after the 915 design was complete and in production, and even though it has advanced features like Pixel Shader 2.0, there is a missing hardware feature, called the Hardware Scheduler, that 915 lacks, and without that, it doesn't meet the WDDM spec from Microsoft, and we (Intel) can't release a WDDM driver for it.
    Doesn't have the hardware features.

It would appear so. This is about Vista, from this providing the drivers were WDDM. Fabe Graphics — Windows Vista* support frequently asked questions

All the Intel chipsets from 945 and newer are SUPPOSED to be able to support Aero.
