Windows 7 freezes when installing HD-5830 drivers

    Hello there,

I have purchased a new PC, which I have built from scratch. Installing the Windows 7 OS went fine until install the 10.5 Catalist drivers for my XFXForce HD-5830 graphics card. Installing is fine, but after the required reboot, the system is starting Windows 7 and after 20 seconds the keyboard and mouse are freezed and I cannot do anything anymore with the system than hitting the reset button.

I have installed all the updates for the OS; also tried a lower version of the Catalist software, the effect remains the same.

    System spec's :

    Motherboard : Asus Rampage II
    CPU : Core 7
    Memory : 6 GB
    4x Maxtor 320 GB
    2x SSD Intel 80 GB
    GPU : XFXForce HD-5830
    Keyboard : Logitec DiNovo Wireless
    Mouse : Logitec DiNovo Wireless

Any recommendations where I can look for ?

    Regards and thanks in advance,

    Hello again,

    - I am not using Everest
    - The used PSU is a ThermalTake TouchPower XT 775 Watt ATX2.
The HD-5830 has 2 external powerconnections, which are connected to the XT775 with the cables supplied

I also tried to install WinXP, but the effect is exactly the same. After installing the
ATI drivers and reboot, the system on running XP seems to freeze and the keyboard / mouse does not work anymore. Hitting the reset is the only option.

Reinstalling (clean) Win7 64b gives the same result. Restoring it to the previous point without an active ATI driver shows no issue.

Are you getting your ATi CCC/drivers from the AMD site or the XFX site? Reason I am asking is that like OEM cards (DELL,HP,Asus etc) the ATi CCC/drivers should be downloaded from the OEM site and not AMD in most cases. I have an Alienware M17x laptop with ATi 4870's in CrossFirex but the CCC/drivers were downloaded at DELL who is the OEM for the PC and the cards were made to their interface specs.
My DELL XPX Studio 435T/9000 desktop had a 4870 which I would download CCC/drivers from DELL but I purchased an XFX 5870 XXX Edition and their version of CCC 10.5 and the drivers were not available until 4 days after AMD released them. If not getting them directly from XFX I suggest that you should, you need the s/n of your card or the model.

I am using the drivers from the XFX website, versions 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5 showing the same results.

Use the drivers from the ATI site... but first, download and install driver sweeper: Guru3D - Driver Sweeper. Then uninstall your current drivers through add/remove programs (if possible). Reboot into safe mode (tap the F8 key at reboot). Run driver sweeper and check the ATI box. Boot normally and then install the 10.5 full package. Drivers & Support | GAME.AMD.COM

This sounds very much like a PSU problem. Your specs are far from complete but even using a baseline PSU calculator, your rig draws 650w on idle. Pushing it rather close, I'd say.

I think perhaps the calculator is busted? Nobody's drawing 650 watt idle unless they've got a mini-bar or microwave attached, which yes, would be nice.

Even adding a few frilly things into this calculator, the recommended PSU still only comes out to 484 watts, which is right in line with this high end gaming rig: PC Power Consumption: How Many Watts Do We Need? (page 7) - X-bit labs

A Google search has led me here. Coralfreak, did you find a solution?

I have the exact same issue, but with a HD 4650 / 4670. My computer freezes up when I'm trying to install the ATI drivers. It's always at the exact same spot when it's trying to analyze my computer. I actually upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 to try and fix the issue but it still is happening! I also traded my brother a 4650 for a 4670 but alas, that did no good. Same problem.

My computer has never locked up before, even when doing benchmarks on it and playing CPU / GPU intensive games. Just when doing this stupid driver install.

I do have my CPU over clocked from 2.5 GHz to 3.5 GHz but I've tried setting it back to stock speed and that hasn't made a difference either. My GPU is not over clocked.

I'm lost as to what to try next. Any advice would be greatly appreciated (I've put in my full system specs into my profile).
