Trouble connecting to tv with S-video

I'm trying to connect my computer to my tv, via a 7 pin s-video with audio to 3.5mm rca cable , my tv is a old sanyo and my computer is a dell desktop and im running windows 7 home premium my graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 240

I'm pretty sure I've hooked everything up fine , what happens is when I boot up my computer the boot up screen shows up fine , but as soon as it hits the login screen it flickers for a bit then the video feed is lost and my tv goes back to the input 1 screen. it's still connected via audio though but for some reason as soon as it hits the login screen it just turns off.

Sounds like the resolution might be set wrong.

    Hi ToshiUmezawa,

The situation that you describe is exactly what happened to me with an earlier NVIDIA card. In the advanced graphics set-up have you set the card to FORCE TV detection?

    Cheers

    Timo

PS: I also agree with rvbfan. Set your resolution low to begin with (also don't set it to any of the widescreen sizes) this should rule out resolution issues.

thanks , also where do I go to set up the FORCE TV detection I could't find it in the nvidia control panel if that's where it's supposed to be , also I managed to get myself into a jam.

I read online that making the tv the primary monitor would help , but since it's not talking properly at the moment I can't change it back to my normal monitor since everytime I try to connect my tv so I can change it back, my normal monitor just sends all the info to the other one. I'm hoping that I can fix this after I fix the graphics setting though.

I can only tell you where I find mine and hope that this guides you. There are two methods.
    1. From the start globe open the windows control panel, look for the NVIDIA COntrol panel, double click. Select 'Setup Multiple Displays', Click My display is not shown', choose 'Rigorous Display Detection', click 'yes'
    OR
    2. Right click on the desktop, select 'screen resolution', click on 'Advanced Settings', choose the tab for your graphics card, click the 'Start NVIDIA COntrol Panel' button. Select 'Setup Multiple Displays', Click My display is not shown', choose 'Rigorous Display Detection', click 'yes'

Remember that this works for my old NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT card, yours may be different.

Lol (and sorry for laughing), I've done this before too. Here are some solutions.
    - The windows shortcut keys to flip displays around are WINDOWS+SHIFT+ARROW KEY (L or R).
    - You may have another shortcut key on your keyboard. FUNCTION+F4 is very common.
    - If you have an onboard graphics card, you can enable that and use it to change the settings back on your NVIDIA other card.

Let me know how you go.

I'd just like to say thanks a bunch for trying to help , your awesome

ok its better now but it's still flickering in and out , mostly out though

now when I hit login screen it flickers for a while before going out and after I login my desktop flashes for a minute and then it goes out , I did as you said and forced detection display and it was listed as TV

but I believe the problem is that it's the same in the display setting where I'd adjust resolution and it still calls it generic Non-pnp monitor so I'm wondering if I can remove it as a monitor and re-discover it then it would fix it.

also something I've seen but I'm wondering about is in the drop down display menu in the adjust resolution settings shouldn't there be a choice of display to s-video? like here http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...Selections.png

and I was able to fix my monitor to make it the primary one again , so thx again.

For the help, you're welcome - that's what we're here for *grin*.

I agree that it does look like a resolution issue at this stage. Perhaps if you connect the TV and the monitor and then select "extend these displays" in the Multiple Display drop downbox (in windows 7 display settings) or similar in your NVIdia settings, you can then extend to the TV. You will be able to adjust the settings individually on the TV and monitor. Once you find out what the TV it is happy with, you can then make it the primary display and select to use only that display in the multiple display settings.

RE: your question about it showing SVIDEO. I'm honestly not sure, having never set an SVIDEO connection in Win7 (just plenty in XP).... but I'm curious about this as well, now that I have learnt it from you
I suppose it would depend on whether or not Win7 recognizes the SVIDEO connection, which would then depend on your hardware and whether or not that is reported back to Windows 7. If the hardware is designed for win7 than you'd think that it'd know; but it's up to the manufacturer.

Let me know how you go with the above.

ok well thanks for the tip about the resolution , I'm almost there but I'm starting to think my tv may just be too old , it's a sanyo from like 2003 the best resolution setting I Was able to find for it was 680x480 with a 29 refresh rate and it's stable but in black and white when I have extended displays on , but what happens when I switch to that being the main display it freaks out and the screen scrolls downward over and over of my desktop. If my TV is too old then its ok , its about time I get a new tv anyway.

The TV should be ok, it's only a signal to SVIDEO in that format that matters and the TV supports it. The black and white and rolling reminds me of NTSC, PAL, or SECAM settings on the TV, try changing these. It seems like your graphics card is from a different zone to your TV.

RE: The Screen Size 680x480.... ah yep.... that is sort of common for older TV's. But for Movies this is quite workable
