Win 7 freezes due to video card?

Hi.
After reviewing videos of windows 7. I decided to make a test run of it.
Downloaded and installed without any problems (a big wow, since this desktop didn't like Vista at all).

It's quite a old computer, eMachines T2385, 2.3 GHZ Intel Celeron, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD. With the Intel 82845GL graphics card.

Since the install, 7 was on VGA_SAVE driver. I installed the driver with xp support, no luck, after 2 minutes it freezes completely. Remove and installed with the .inf file only, same problem. Left the VGA_SAVE driver, and it freezes too. TO add, I disabled the 3D acceleration. But no luck.

Any suggestions of installing another driver? OR I'm out of luck with 7?

I'm thinking of installing 7 on my Laptop (Intel 1.4GHz Celeron M , 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD with the intel 915/910GM video card) but I don't know if this problem will repeat....

well it might be the fact that ur old computer can't run DX10.. but even though it's old. I don't think it's THAT old. it should be working.

did you do a CLEAN install.

somehow... somewhat. I disabled completely the hardware acceleration to none. And, right now it's running. I hope it stays that way.

To answer the question, I did a partition of my HDD, separing 20GB out of 80 and do a clean install (with dual boot)

And for windows xp, I can run DX10 without problems, but seems that the failure it's the driver for the 845 card. Since it wasn't updated for vista, it doesn't have the WMMA (or something like that) drivers.

Hello there,

Some people have the same problem with various PC configurations.
What do you do when it freezes is my question? Do you run other applications or it freezes on desktop? If you run games or play videos or just want to try the most effective to some extend solution is to disable AERO. If it gets stable you can fine tune it and disable it only when running programs that make it freeze. For example WOW game is reported to do that often. Rightclick shortcut check in compatibility tab "disable desktop composition".

Best of luck mate

The whole dx10 thing in this thread is irrelevant. dx10 is not required for aero or win 7 or vista for that matter.

To the OP; the 845 chipset is very old, sorry. Intel just ditched their old chipsets when vista was released.

@SENTRI
To answer the question. It completely freezes the computer, no response at all. ANd AERO isn't enabled, due to the score of..... 1?

@12eason
I know. DX10 is irrevelant, but my answer was that my computer can run it.
Maybe in some future I update the video card. Or even the whole computer. Maybe I try running linux with this one and go to 7 with my laptop, but I don't know if the 915's have the same problem.... or worse.

Not meaning to be picky here, but I think you're mistaken. a) dx10 won't run on XP and b) you chipset isn't capable of dx10.

The 915 has vista drivers that work in 7, but it won't do Aero either unfortunately. 945 is the first intel chipset to do Aero.
