Please start your own thread, muskane. Post whether you can get to the Advanced boot options by repeatedly tapping F8 immediately after hitting ESC following the error message.

Hi muskane, welcome to SevenForums. That you have posted in this thread indicates that you have gone through this thread in search of a solution. That is good.

While trying to educate myself on this problem, I have also run through your post in a similiar thread in techarena forum. So you have also gone through that thread.

I am also sure you would have googled on this problem ( just like I did :)) and assimilated all available information.

    1. This error message seems specific to HP/Compaq systems and frequently encountered by many. So this seems to be specific to the SMART implementation by HP/Compaq.

    2. In some cases the hard drive was indeed failing.

    3. In most cases the diagnostics passed the hard disks as having no problems, but the system continued to give out the error messages.

    4. In atleast one case, even after replacing with a new HDD the system continued with the same error message.

So I would say no specific solution seems to have emerged (to my knowledge), except the usual sermonizing, that you should immediately backup all your data on your drive, update the BIOS and drivers, check the HDD is properly seated etc.,

Do all that plus check your HDD with the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic/repair tool ( rather than limiting to the HP/Compaq tool ) and above all contact HP/Compaq Service and Support.

Inasmuch as this is specific to their products, they should know better and should it be under warranty still, they should replace the HDD if need be.

I have recently been through a Hard Disk Error 301 problem personally and I'm telling you this now, you need to back up your files that you want to keep. After that is done, if you have a system restoration disk, great! If you do not have a system restoration disk, you need to make one. Once that's done, you must buy a new hard drive. The Hard Disk Error 301 is not an error about software or viruses, it's a physical deformity of the hard disk. Replace the hard drive and use the restoration disks to format the drive like a new computer. Afterwards, transfer your files back to your computer. I would also recommend that you move your laptop as little as possible while it's on. This will keep the disk from being physically damaged, thus keeping your computer from receiving another Error 301.

But any way thanks for your help. I am not worried about 301 error because now i am thinking of upgrading my HDD too. Another big issue i have got is SERIAL NUMBER NOT FOUND. One of the sevenforums member told me to change the HDD with hope of getting back SERIAL NUMBER. Recently i turn the laptop without having HDD but still the SERIAL NUMBER NOT FOUND error remain the same. If we know about it please help me.
    thank you
