DVD burner issue

I'm attempting to burn data to DVD for permanent backup and storage, but there seems to be an issue. Every once in a while, the burning "hangs" at a seemingly random file, and stays at "35 (or however many) minutes remaining" forever. If I click cancel, it hangs of "Canceling" and stays "Canceling" forever. Either way, if I try to eject the disc, I get the message "An error occurred while ejecting DVD RW Drive (D:)"

If I reboot the computer (using the power button, since using Restart or Shut Down leaves the computer hanging at "Logging Off" forever), I can eject just fine (though the disc is ruined), and I can just put in another blank disc and burn all the files I was attempting to burn just fine. But I'm going through a lot of blank discs this way, and I'm wondering if there's a known issue here or if I'm doing something wrong.

Thanks for any assistance.

Type eventvwr in the start search box, then click the icon to see what critical event happened ...

Under Critical, all I can see that it says is "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly." There's two of those from today, one for each time I had to shut the computer off by power button.
