Windows 7: Characters not displayed

Windows 7 ultimate 64bit
Characters not displayed

I have a strange problem whereby certain characters are not displayed straight away as I type. In particular the ^ character and ' character don't display as I type them; they are only displayed on the next key press. For example if I type abc^def, the ^ character is only displayed when the d is typed. This isn't a speed issue because I can type the abc^def leaving a delay of a minute after the ^ key is pressed and then when I type the d charcter, the ^ is displayed.

Also the ^ character is acting as a modifier; for example if I type ^e, then the character is displayed.

The problem is system wide, occurring in this post, notepad, word etc etc.

I am using windows 7 ultimate 64bit with a microsoft natural ergonomic keyboard 4000, running Microsoft Intellitype Pro v7.10.344.0 64bit.

I didn't have any issues like this on Windows Xp using the same keyboard and and Intellitype Pro. The custom key settings in Intellitype Pro are just the Bank 1 standard settings that have not been altered.

Does anyone know how to stop this behaviour?
