    Time to upgrade?

I am thinking that a new cpu (one that is compatible with my Mobo) is a good idea can anyone tell what I should get. My Socket is an 775 socket I believe correct me if I am wrong though.

Unfortunately, you have a similar problem to what I had when I wanted to upgrade my motherboard. Your motherboard only supports the older Core 2 CPUs, which you can't easily find for sale new anymore or at decent prices. Your best bet would be looking on eBay and getting either a Core 2 Duo E6700 or Core 2 Quad Q6600 but if you can find these new, then you've got it made. Also ensure you update your BIOS before upgrading.

Asus has a CPU support list:

    ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

It also lists the earliest BIOS versions required for each CPU. (Later versions are OK.)
