Windows 7 - Disc Burn Failures

Disc Burn Failures

I've got a Lite-On DVD burner, it's been very reliable until now. It appears to read discs fine, but when I burn it tends to fail at a random point in the burn. I can burn the same project and it'll fail at different points although there is no actual fail message, it just does not progress even though the drive is spinning constantly and doesn't stop spinning when I cancel the burn. I've used the CDBurnerXP and Nero and gotten the same results. It appears to be a hardware problem, but I'm in denial. The only other thing I can think of is the SATA cable, but it should be fine. Any thoughts?

Everything I can think of seems fairly obvious, but I'll give them a shot. Are you writing at the lowest possible burn speed? Have you tired reseating the drive (disconnecting both cable from it and reconnecting them)? When did the problem begin?

I had another idea. Go here, pick out the drive you have, and upgrade the firmware for it.

I did not try a lower burn speed, I'm going to reattach the cable and see what happens. I did upgrade the firmware at one point, but maybe there is a newer version or it somehow got corrupt. I did recently travel with the drive in a suitcase, I was able to burn some discs after that for a day or two, but it's possible the drive got damaged.

When you say you are burning a project, is this a video project? If so what program did you use to create it and what format is the file you are trying to burn?

I've just been trying to burn data, I just said project because I was trying to burn the same files again, but got different results.

I just updated the firmware, even though I had the latest version I'm guessing it became corrupt because I was just able to burn a disc, hopefully the problem is solved. Thanks guys for your help.

Glad we could help. The firmware becoming corrupted is possible and was what I was thinking when I suggested updating it.

Pleased to hear that all is now well. I mentioned video burning as this is notorious for "glitches" in burning, often caused by complex transitions in the video!
